This serene landscape provided an ideal backdrop for capturing nature’s beauty in this northern California setting outside of Edgewood.

This is in Waterton Lakes National Park. I used the hiking trail to my front as a leading line into the image with an opening in the trees. The distant peaks and ridges beyond the forest are in the US in Glacier National Park. What drew me into this setting was the layers present from the nearby woods and meadow to the view beyond with the mountains and peaks.

Itineraries in Exploring Shasta-Trinity National Forest by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the south while taking in views at the Panther Meadows Trailhead (Upper) in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. What drew me into this setting was getting down low behind some nearby rubber rabbitbrush and then looking over them to evergreens and mountains as a distant backdrop. I also adjusted the angle of my Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera slightly downward, bringing the horizon higher into the image and reducing the perceived negative space of the skies above.

Getting My Steps in Outside (Lassen Volcanic National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While hiking along the Cinder Cone Trail with a view looking to the south-southwest. This is in Lassen Volcanic National Park. My thought on composing this image had been to zoom in with the focal length and have this mountainside fill the image from edge to edge. I wanted the viewer to seemingly be emerged in this national park setting. The rest of the image composition was aligning myself with the lone evergreen pine tree to my front and having that curve of the hiking trail leading up the mountain across the image somewhat balance the tree.

Lights and Shadows in Bryce Canyon National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While at an overlook to the switchbacks down along the Navajo Loop in Bryce Canyon National Park. The view is looking to the south and down to the Wall Street area along the trail. I captured this using the in-camera HDR setting with my Nikon D850 SLR camera. I later processed this using DxO PhotoLab 5 making adjustments to contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

My Altars are the Mountains and the Ocean (Black & White) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A conversion to black & white using Capture NX2 where I used some color filters to bring out a much richer tonal contrast for the final image. The nearby mountainside added a better tonal contrast for the whites of the snowcapped peak off in the distance. Captured while on a boat ride on Lake Chelan while in Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
