Marigold or Aztec marigold or Mexican marigold (Tagetes erecta) even though it’s native to the Americas, it grows from the southwestern United States into South America, it’s often called the African marigold. Some species have become naturalised around the world. Their name in English, “marigold”, is derived from Mary's gold, a name first applied to a similar plant native to Europe, The Calendula (Calendula officinalis.). Very good near tomatoes because they have stuff in their roots that kills nematodes. For best results take off the dead heads as this will encourage more flowers and make the plant more bushy. Grow from seed easily or a punnet from the nursery. My marigolds are finally blooming! Yet another plant I’ve not killed! It seems planting in Autumn/Winter proves to be more successful than Spring and Summer! I also have cauliflower, brocolini, strawberries, tomato, rosemary and lavender that are going rather well. A native of Mexico,Tagetes erecta (African marigold, American marigold, Aztec marigold, Big marigold, Mexican marigold) is a tender perennial that is usually grown as an annual. Here the plant is still flowering into the winter in the protection of the Temperate House of the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, London.
