Do What They Never Would: Stay

The day of Azula's coronation has come, but she finds herself wandering into the depths of the palace to visit their latest prisoner. Zuko failed to escape on the day of the Black Sun and has been left to his father's cruel hands. Seeing his sister, Zuko no longer sees an enemy, but a girl just as broken as him. He decides to do something no one ever did for Azula: Stay. Facing a new world, can Zuko and Azula must bring the Fire Nation into a new era. May Agni's Light Bless Fire Lord Azula.

I have loved ATLA ever since I was a little kid watching it on Nickelodean. After years of reading fanfiction and writing original stories, I realized I had another type of story to share. I wanted to give special thanks to @muffinlance. "Toward the Sun" provided major inspiration for the jumping off point of this fic and to take a new look at the Fire Siblings dynamic. I also wanted to thank @a-witch-in-endor whose "where the stars do not take side" changed my world, and @occasionalstorytelling whose "There is No Fire Lord" plot lives on repeat in my brain.

while im writing second chapter for “confidantes”, i have some more headcanons for it???

(azula is the one who’s banished au)

• so one of the main reasons azula is banished is not her speaking out of turn, but something else. her and zuko think their meetings at the pond are secret, but its not true — ozai notices the forming bond betweeb them and decides to interfere.

• so for azula zuko becames someone to blame for the way things turn out before she understand who the true villain is

• zuko sneaks in to watch her ship take off from under guard‘s helmet

• azula is in fever for the 14 days on the ship, and every day she stubbornly tries to get up, insisting she’s perfectly fine

• no one, but iroh and the physician know mai and ty lee are on the ship until Azula’s fever breaks

• ty lee keeps insisting they should name their team somehow

• mai sleeps with knives under her pillow and throat means ty lee and azula do too, because they all sleep on two bunk beds pushed together

• once azula wakes up, mai has a gift for her — she stole her personal ensign from the throne room

• (it makes azula cry)

• mai wants her hair shorter, so ty lee cuts them for her

• (honestly sometimes it’s just a big sleepover)

• once they run away, the real arc for all of them starts — they are wanted in the whole nation and colonies in a week

(thats the record time)

• but it’s a long way for azula from the banished princess to the people’s mysterious hero

She has steel precision on her face, her fingers sharp and the ends of her nails as deadly as her knives.

Azula stands for a few moments, frozen, not able to move — something in the dangerous, deadly movements mesmerizes her endlessly — and she hears her short breaths resonate. The air around is thick and stuffy — Mai cuts it in pieces with her knives.

The world stops for a moment, and she’s stuck in this feeling — her head pulsing, knives flying, the air boiling around.

Mai sharply turns, piercing Azula with her golden eyes, and the spell breaks.

He remembers seeing Azula near the pond every evening — the only thing that became consistent in his life, full of leaving people and burnt bridges, and now it disappeared too. Zuko tries to piece all the hints together but he still doesn’t know anything about Azula. And he’s too scared to ask Father. Truly pathetic, he is.

He could actually believe for a moment, back then, that Azula actually wanted to be his sister.

He can’t sleep nearly at all — it’s all the same nightmare which is more of a feeling — like it’s horribly, suffocatingly hot and he can’t breath, choking while it smells like burnt flesh. He always slips out of his room, dark as his shadow — his life lessons, — and goes to the old library he found in the older part of the palace.

He was still dressed in their uniform: black and green robes, black and green hat, with his plait still worn long down his back, although this time it was tucked into his robe.

Azula thought to move towards him, but… something was holding her back. Maybe it was the raised hairs on her arms and neck, maybe it was how she could feel that she was on earth and not metal… something wasn’t right.

The Dai Li Chief slowly turned… and his plait did not move like it should have. It stayed, almost painted to his neck, and when the moonlight shining through the barred windows hit his neck, the plait was nothing more than a blue stripe.

Azula leapt into the air as the Avatar thrust his foot into the ground, and the earth beneath her crumbled.

 Azula helps her father escape to be the figurehead of a Fire Nation revolution. The Gaang filters their way back to the Fire Nation to help out while dealing with the politics that come with a newly founded Republic City and a brewing Civil War.
