Scene Overviews & Explorative Strategies
Everyone is stood in a diamond format on stage. Josephine, Danielle and Hope are stood on the floor facing the audience whilst Beth is stood on the box at the back to show power. Sophie is stood on the floor in front of Beth with her hands over her eyes and mouth to show that she is unaware of the horrors taking place in the West home.
Beth begins the scene by saying “Do what you want, just don’t get caught” and clicking. This, again, shows power as this starts off the whole scene. Jade then walked over to Danielle. She faces her and says “Do what you want, just don’t get caught.” She tries to pass Danielle, who blocks her way, and then pushes her down to the floor. Danielle then freezes in this position and begins to repeatedly whisper the same line, “Do what you want, just don’t get caught.” Jade then moves on and walks over to Hope. She punches her in the stomach, and uses her hair to pull back her head and push her down also. Hope then follows the same actions, freezes and begins to whisper repeatedly. Jade then walks around the back of the stage to Josephine on the other side of the stage. Jade then hints at sexual acts towards Josephine and pushes her down too, alike the others. Josephine then joins in whispering.
Jade ends this scene by walking to the front of the stage and shouting “Do what you want, just don’t get caught” to the audience. This ends the whispering.
Scene 1 explorative strategies;
Repetition of the line “Do what you want, just don’t get caught” is used throughout this scene. This emphasises the importance of the line throughout the play, and shows that it influences Jades decisions and actions.
Mime is also used to show the abuse of the children as Jade hurts them and pushes them to the floor. The silence of the mime whilst Jade is abusing the others creates tension and suggests to the audience that the horrors happening in the West home were kept silent and undiscovered.
Scene 2 runs straight on from Scene 1 with no blackout or pause in between. This makes the scenes flow together better. Sophie comes straight into the scene after Jade has shouted her line. She starts the scene by waking the girls up and telling them about the day she has planned. Hope, Danielle, Josephine and Sophie are sat on the floor, centre stage. Sophie asks if the girls would like to go bowling and as the girls cheer to agree with Sophie, Beth walks in to stop the scene by saying “Your father wants to see you” to Danielle, who then coils up into herself to suggest to the audience that her father is going to abuse her in some way. This scene is used to suggest that Sophie (the children’s Nanny) has no idea what’s going on behind closed doors and that the children are happy around her and have fun, but their mood changed to withdrawn when with their parents, or thoughts and mentions of them. Everyone except Beth then freezes as she walks forward to do her monologue. She begins by expressing how much she hates the children for “not realising how much love they have.” With this line she crouches down to Hope and turns her head to kiss her. She then goes on to talk about her childhood and her relationship with her father, at which point Danielle breaks out of her freeze frame and acts as Rose’s father. Beth implies the sexual side of hers and her father’s relationship by saying “I had a lot of love when I was little, from my dad.” The anger and physical abuse from her father also becomes apparent as Beth tells the audience that “When he was in a good mood, I was always daddy’s little girl. But when he was in a bad mood, I was nothing, and he always used to tell me how much he…” and Danielle completes this sentence by saying “I hate you! Your nothing!” After this Jade breaks out of her freeze frame and walks towards Beth saying “Nothing” and gradually getting louder until she is infront of Beth and shouts it. Beth then continues the monologue in explaining the relationship between Rose and Fred. When the monologue is finished Jade and Beth turn away from each other and walk around to stand behind Hope and Josephine.
Scene 2 explorative strategies;
Freeze Frame is used in this scene when Beth does her monologue. The other people are still on stage but are frozen to keep concentration on Beth, but still showing that the children are involved heavily in the story. Hope and Danielle do, however, break out of the freeze frame to interact with Beth during her monologue.
In scene 3, Jade and Beth control Hope and Josephine as though they are puppets. They first lift the left arm, then the right, and then stand up. This is done facing with the pairs facing one another, as though a mirror image. Jade and Beth then click to cause Hope and Josephine to drop their arms. Continuing to stay in synch, Jade and Beth stroke Hope and Josephine from the top of the head, down to the shoulders, and down the arm until they reach the hand. They then grab then and spin them round so that they are back to back.
Whilst Hope and Josephine stay still, back to back Jade and Beth walk over to Danielle, who is on the floor. Beth holds her down whilst Jade stands over her. Danielle screams “no” as the lights black out. This subtly indicates the sexual abuse from Fred and Rose West towards their children.
Scene 3 explorative strategies;
Mime is also used here in scene 3. This is so the music in the background can be heard to add heavy atmosphere to the scene showing the audience the intensity of the control Fred and Rose had over each other, and the children.
