The factory MG team enjoyed a day to remember as the second meeting of the BTCC season kicked off at Donington Park, topping both practice sessions before snaring pole position in the East Midlands.
Second year driver Josh Cook proved to be the man to beat throughout practice at the wheel of his MG6, leading the way in both sessions at the circuit where he showed his talents last year with a starring role for Power Maxed Racing.
Come qualifying however, it was team-mate Ash Sutton who emerged on top from an action-packed session that saw no fewer than three red flags and a last gasp five minute shootout for top spot.
That shootout came after Andrew Jordan put his Ford Focus off at the Old Hairpin to bring out the second red flag (the first having come early after an off for Mark Howard) and it looked like Motorbase team-mate Mat Jackson was set to snare top spot before he too went off the road.
Luckily for Sutton, he was able to complete his quick lap before the session was halted for a third time and the chequered flag thrown, putting the rookie on pole for the first time in only his second meeting.
“We timed it right with the run and I’m over the moon,” he said. “Everyone was in the same boat trying to find space on the track, and it ended up being whoever had the car beneath them at the right time and our MG Racing RCIB Insurance car did it for us. Whoever got on the slicks first was quickest. We went on the radio and told the team to do it and we got the rewards for making that decision. It’s a surprise to me as I didn’t know I had got pole until we stopped.”
Team-mate Cook shares the front row having also managed to get another quick lap in before the red flag flew, although he admitted to mixed emotions at not getting top spot in the session himself, with Jackson – who blamed his own off at trying to avoid the Proton of Dan Welch which was having a moment of its own – ending up third quickest.
Defending champion Gordon Shedden managed fourth having earlier failed the ride height test; luckily for the Scot in the early stages of the session before any times had been set. Tom Ingram and Rob Collard rounded out the top six.
Colin Turkington was best of the Subaru drivers once again having managed to get his Levorg onto the fringes of the top ten but there were others who were left to rue the conditions; with Jordan down in 25th after his off track excursion and Sam Tordoff only 21st having been unable to get a lap in at the end.
Only 30 cars would manage to take part in the session, with Kelvin Fletcher being forced to sit out proceedings after going off in second practice and damaging his Chevrolet Cruze.
