Mark your calendar and set your DVRs/Tivos, so you don’t miss ”How to Kill an Asteroid” episode of Man Vs. The Universe. The show will air Wednesday, August 20th on The Science Channel at 10pm ET/PT (USA).

“How to Kill an Asteroid”

Asteroids have decimated life on Earth before and they will again. Across the globe, scientists, engineers and astronauts are gearing up for a cosmic battle to hunt asteroids and prevent them from hitting us. In this episode, viewers will meet the experts building new telescopes and space probes to detect the estimated one million asteroids out there that could wipe out an entire city. We’ll explore plans to knock an incoming asteroid off course with a kamikaze spacecraft, or to shoot asteroids down with giant space lasers. And we go inside the craziest NASA mission ever proposed – to capture an asteroid in deep space with a giant bag and move it to the Moon.

You may remember earlier in the year that the acclaimed indie band Broken Bellsendorsed their support for the Sentinel Mission and donated proceedsfrom their recent tour to further the construction of the Sentinel Space Telescope. “ Given enough lead time, asteroids on a collision course with Earth can be safely deflected using a handful of methods. One of these is the gravity tractor technique, in which a robotic probe flies alongside a space rock for months or years, gradually nudging it off course via a slight gravitational tug.

The greater the shepherding probe’s mass, the stronger its gravitational pull is. And poaching a boulder off a potentially hazardous asteroid would allow a deflection mission to increase its mass significantly without having to pay any additional launch costs.

"We’d go into this enhanced gravity tractor position after we retrieve the boulder and demonstrate that we have even more gravity attraction capability by doing that," Lindley Johnson, program executive for NASA’s Near-Earth Object (NEO) observations program, told reporters in March. “
