They look at Southerners as though we were some kind of exotic animal —

But they don’t usually say it so plainly because they know we all own guns down here and they’ve heard that we believe that anything that can’t be baptized should be shot.

So they couch their supposed moral superiority in thinly veiled questions like “What is the Deep South really like, what with all those sweaty poors and buttermilk?”

“Just like Faulkner described it,” we tell them. “So impoverished we can’t even afford to use punctuation. We shoot people over semicolons. Truly an awful place. I’d stay away.”
