Hastily sketched buddies
I will commit to standing out. I’ve found that people have been receptive to my hobbies and art I do outside of school work. I placed some of my personal work at the end of my portfolio, and both coworkers and this time my externship host have expressed interest and support for my drawings. I will try to make this a greater part of myself, and have it come through in my professional work as well.
Caring Buddies
Mentorship comes in all forms. Whether it's through a more experienced individual or through buddies like my externs, mentorship is accepted in so many ways. I have learned so much from Brenna that I will take into my professional and working life, while I have learnt so much from my BAC friends. The questions and curiosity they brought each day made the experience so rewarding. I plan to implement mentorship in my next semester by asking more questions and not being afraid to dig deeper. Brenna ensured we always felt encouraged to ask any question, big or small. I hope to take that with me.
An attentive and engaged mentor
The past four days at DCAMM have been so informative, well-organized and engaging. Brenna, our supervisor, filled our week with meetings from all the teams on DCAMM, a site visit to an active project, a charrette exercise and the opportunity to sit in on a high-visibility meeting with the commissioner. I have gained so much knowledge from all the talented members of DCAMM and learned so much from each team. Brenna always encouraged questions and answered our questions with thoughtfulness, care and intention, which made the experience very inclusive. As the week progressed, I felt very comfortable discussing topics and questions I had with Brenna because of the environment she fostered. I feel very fulfilled by my time as an extern at DCAMM because of Brenna and the team's passion for their work and projects. Their drive and passion influenced me, and I will carry them with me as I continue my time in architecture school and beyond.
It looks like integration and collaboration
Today we started our morning with an Accessibility Team Overview Meeting. This was a very fascinating presentation because we discussed how inclusion plays an important role in universal design. Greg talked about how if designers defaulted to using ramps instead of a combination of stairs and ramps there is less of an isolation on the population. This was interesting to me because in my past 2 studio classes both of my professors prioritized the inclusion of ramps over stairs in our designs. Greg showed us an example from a cape cod project that showed the difference in an elevated pathway which ended up suiting the needs of everyone. I included a sketch of my interpretation of this.
We were also able to sit in on a high-visibility project meeting with Adam, the commissioner, and many other members of the planning team. It was super informative and interesting to see all the research, data, and planning diagrams created during this process. It was also interesting to observe the feedback and questions raised during this meeting.
Intercultural competence is the ability for a workplace to meet the needs of a variety of cultures through inclusiveness, open-mindedness, and collaboration.
Welcome Warmth
Upon stepping foot on the 15th floor of DCAMM, Brenna greeted me with warmth and excitement and invited me into a very welcoming environment. Today we were introduced to members of the energy and planning team as well as the employees around the office during our tour of the floor. Ray gave us a very informative and descriptive tour of the State house which was interesting to learn about not only the architecture details and historical preservation but a bit of American history as well. It is clear that the DCAMM office operates very efficiently and collaboratively with all teams reaching out and communicating to complete projects. We learnt early on in the day the different paths (getting on and off highway exits was a metaphor used) is what make the DCAMM teams so knowledgeable and valuable. I am eager to continue to learn more about the other teams that make up DCAMM.

Hi, my name is Bianca DiCaro, and I am in my first year of the Master of Architecture program. I am originally from Toronto, Canada, but moved to Boston for school. I am so excited for my week with DCAMM, where I will learn about public building construction and design.
Hello!! My name is Nutsa Gabriadze. I'm currently moving into my 4th semester at the BAC. I am an international student from Kutaisi, Georgia but have actually never lived there. I had the opportunity to live internationally in Switzerland, Japan, and Azerbaijan. I feel lucky to be in Boston now and to have the opportunity to complete the PCX program with GFT! I can't wait to learn with a firm that also specializes in engineering and construction.

Hi everyone! My name is Kendall and I am in my second semester of the MIA program at the BAC. I recently graduated from the University of Tampa with a Bachelor of Art degree in Design with a minor in Business Administration. I grew up in Florida and currently live in Boston. This is my first semester doing the PCX program and am with Margulies Perruzzi Architects. I can't wait to get started!
