Bach’s marvellous Cantata No. 54, Widerstehe doch der Sünde. The opening features pioneering dissonances, unheard of in Bach’s time. Glenn Gould expounds on these in his analysis and performance of the work. Here is Rudolf Lutz conducting this work for the Bach Stiftung.
Cantata No. 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein. Performed by the wonderful Bach Stiftung.
I have been listening to Bach’s Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn frequently in recent days. An incredibly beautiful cantata, particularly the oboe parts. Performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society.
Another Bach video for Russian speakers:
ИОАГАНН СЕБАСТЬЯН БАХ - КОМПОЗИТОР И БОГОСЛОВ
The title means: Johann Sebastian Bach- Composer and Theologian. This video features many excerpts from Bach’s works, so don’t worry if you cannot speak Russian. The second half of the video features a moving performance of Bach’s Cantata, Ich habe genug.
(Side note: I was quite proud of myself for being able to deduce the meaning of “Bogoslov” to “God” and “Word”. Linguee informed me that this meant “theologian, obviously from the Greek, in which “Theos” is “God” and “logos” is “word”. I love etymology!).
It’s 21/03/2020, so will be listening to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach for most of the day. Here is BWV 23, a Cantata of astonishing force and beauty: Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn. Performed by the excellent Bach-Stiftung, directed by Rudolf Lutz. Some of Bach’s loveliest melodies feature the oboe. Off the top of my head, I can think of BWV 55 (Ich armer Mensch) and the Adagio from Brandenburg 1.
