aksjdhjsks It's extremely relevant; he's Sherlock Holmes in the Japanese version of the game, but the ACD estate protested (I don't know what, exactly, they had the grounds for/objected to, unless it was that the Holmes character was written as a big idiot who's always wrong). Considering AA started as a satire and its sense of humor has always leaned toward parody/tongue-in-cheek, this almost feels like the better outcome 😂

To be fair it's a quote from the book of Micah so I'll be generous and say the translator could be Jewish or Christian (although I have my suspicions), but just on principle I feel like if you're translating a folkloric/religious text you should try as best you can to keep your translation free of biases related to other folkloric/religious traditions and save any comparisons for a thesis/journal/etc.

#pictures #back sass #yetanotherplayer #Something I appreciate about the foreword in my copy of The Aeneid #is Susanna Braund mentions the frequent use of the Latin word 'pius' to refer to Aeneas #However the modern English word (pious) has completely different implications than the original Latin #so instead Sarah Ruden translated it contextually as 'loyal' or 'steadfast' or what have you #and made notes as to when it was another appearance of the Latin pius #Responsible thoughtful translation!#Write a paper on pius -> pious and Aeneas separately if the topic so inspires you #but recognize that modern association with the word pious comes from a religion that literally didn't exist yet when The Aeneid was written #and structure your translation in such a way so as to not accidentally invite such comparisons where they don't belong #It's hard! But it's good translating
