Mount Rainier National Park: Day 1
We arrived in the late afternoon planning on hiking out of Sunrise to Berkeley Camp. Upon our arrival we discovered the road to Sunrise closed still for the season and wasn’t scheduled to be opened till July 1st, in 6 days. This meant we had to hike out of White River instead, adding 2.2 miles and another climb to get to Berkeley, and it was already 4:30pm.
We decided instead to change out whole itinerary.
Instead of leaving out of sunrise and staying at Berkeley Camp - Yellowstone Cliffs - Mystic Lake Camp.
We left out of White River stayed at Sunrise Camp - James Camp - Mystic Creek Camp.
Not only did this add extra mileage to the trip and an extra climb to the hiking trip. It meant that on our second full day of hiking, we would have two climbs. instead of the original one a day.
The kind ranger warned us that we might encounter some snow on one side of the mountain and that some of the bridge crossings might be sketchy.
We set off for Sunrise Camp, or so we thought. We went the wrong way for about 1/4 mile.
Finally on the right trial we made our way uphill. There was a bit on snow along the way, and save for one sketchy bridge, that was mostly just a pile of logs, the trail was smooth sailing.
