casting a hex on my worst enemy: ooo your favorite book series as a teenager will be turned into a popular tv show. and it will be absolutely terrible and completely disrespectful to the source material, but will greatly exceed the books in popularity. so whenever you look for content online about said books series, you will forever be reminded of the mediocrity of said tv show. you will be forced block the tag for it on ao3.

Actually though my biggest issue with The First Shadow is

How the fuck are you gonna tell me Hopper and Joyce and Bob were all intimately involved with upside down shenanigans

And then conveniently forgot all about it by the time of the series ?? To the point they thought Joyce was going crazy and shit

The First Shadow was, uh, bad actually.

I’m glad it wasn’t made available on streaming or whatever bc I don’t want this influencing people’s view of canon.

Wish I hadn’t watched it tbh.

Like how is Joyce “the hammer with the curvy thingy” Byers supposed to have the Communist Manifesto in her locker?

And making Dustin’s mom into a cat-obsessed, incest practicing, capital W weirdo. Lowkey insulting to Dustin (implies his physical condition is due to incest??) and insulting to her as a single mom (implies it’s because she’s into incest and not just a capable woman who happens to not have a husband??) and makes her even flatter of a character and lowkey contradicts her canon character, when what we know about her in canon besides her (obviously) comedic “mom” role is that she proudly votes democrat in a small conservative town.

And Fred and Karen? Who are those people? They’re not my Fred and Karen…

Bob having a random adopted/foster sister who is actually the secret love child of *checks notes* some random ass school principal in small town Indiana and a famous singer who may or may not be supposed to be Ella fucking Fitzgerald ??

Who also just COINCIDENTALLY is the favorite music that saved Victor Creel.

And Hopper’s dad making him join the military- that contradicts canon.

And Eddie’s dad and all the other characters being involved.

Like it’s a small town, but it’s not THAT small. The fuck.

the desire to find a retelling or cool new adaptation of your favourite classic story versus the fear of said adaptation blatantly missing the themes of said story and making you angry

I never care much for the award seasons but I hope Severance wins all its nominations. Maybe it will impulse these morons to create original stories instead of a million bad adaptations done by people that hate the source materials.
