29: what is a book/story that had stuck with you since childhood?

I'm sorry I took so long to answer this. I had a very traumatic and absolutely insane 4 days over the weekend and I also really wanted to give this question some thought. Just like music, books have played a very important role in my life. I've been obsessed with reading since I was a very little kid. It's not uncommon for me to go through 5-6 books a week. It's not uncommon for me to be reading 2 or 3 books all the time. It just depends on what's going on. But when you spend a lifetime reading like that, it gives you a lot to pick from.

When I was 15 or 16 my aunt brought over a brown paper bag full of books for my mom to sort through and then donate if she didn't want them. At the bottom of the bag was this book. And I was drawn to it from the cover. Prior to that I had still been reading teenage series type books. And various other mysteries or dramas that were geared towards teenagers. But I read this book in one night. And I was obsessed. Then I went to the library and eventually I worked my way through reading everything he had written. This series introduced me to my love of psychological thriller books especially if they are written from the perspective of the person investigating a crime. It also made me realize how much I thoroughly enjoy series books rather than one offs. But then it also started a conversation between me and my aunt. That weekend she called for my mom who wasn't home but I told her I found the book and read it. We talked for over an hour that night. We were always close but that was by far the longest we had ever spoken on the phone. I found that we love the same kind of books. And since then it's always been something that we bond over. Something we have shared with each other. She buys me books. I buy her books. We send each other recommendations. We talk about the books that we've read. It's just our thing.

When I was 18 my mom died and I moved in with that aunt. She became like a second mother to me. And that's not an easy thing to do. To be assigned the task of taking care of someone else's child when they are 18, think they know everything and now they are angry at the world. There were weeks I wouldn't leave my room. I wouldn't talk to anyone. Every couple days she would leave a book outside my bedroom door. When I was done with it I would put it right back where I found it. And then I would find another one. And for months that's how she helped me. If I was focused on a book I couldn't think about anything else. I could forget about the grief for a little bit. It was the only thing I could do. I just wanted to get lost in my stories. And she understood that.

Last year when I was in a coma she sat at my bedside every single day and she read to me. And after I was awake but before I could really talk or do anything she kept reading. Just hearing her soft voice. Knowing she was there. Letting me close my eyes and get lost in my stories.

We have a very special bond. I'd like to think it started when I was born. But if I'm honest it started with this book. Thanks for the question ♥️
