I just saw someone say we need less of the After or The Kissing Booth stuff and I kind of disagree.
I love a lot of things that are considered trashy or bad media. And my take is that we absolutely need the trash. But make it exclusive.
Give me the “bad “ literature or movies and shows. Write the absurd storylines. Give me the queer twilight or the queer hallmark Christmas movies. But make them inclusive.
Please make all the bad, trashy or ridiculous media but make it for everyone. Give pic, queer people, disabled people, plus size folks, folks of all genders books, movies, tv shows, comics and everything else where they can see themselves represented but don’t be afraid to make it embarrassing to watch.
Like remember First Kill? It was kind of trashy, ridiculous, had bad effects and at times absolutely hysterical dialogue. It was a cringy supernatural show for lesbians and for black people to see themselves and for everyone else to enjoy.
And it was bad. And it was glorious. And that is exactly my point. Why do we always expect diverse and inclusive media to be masterpieces? Those are obviously great but sometimes we just want cringe, low-budget special effects and stupid dialogue.
Sometimes escapism needs to be stupid to be fun and that’s okay.
As that one twilight renaissance post said: cringe culture is dead and I'm bringing its corpse for the reward money
