Animal Kingdom: What can we expect in season 3?

Short answer: I have no idea.

TNT’s Animal Kingdom wrapped up its 13 episode season 2 a little more than a week ago and I am still thinking about it.

The most shocking moment of the season occurred in just the last few minutes of episode 13,“Betrayal,” in which Baz is shot and Lucy leaves him for dead. However, it is shown that Lucy and Marco are then stealing Baz’s loot (which he stole from Smurf) and we are to assume Marco is the one who shot Baz. Finally, we see Smurf looking solemn in her cell and J looking anti-social at his (read: Nicky’s) graduation party. 

Ok. I want to begin with some theories, because I have plenty.

1. It is exactly what it looks like: Lucy instructed Marco to shoot Baz so the two could then steal his/Smurf’s money and head back to Mexico. 

2. Smurf put Lucy and Marco up to shooting Baz and stealing her money back, and promised them a cut of the money for doing so. Though knowing Smurf, whether she actually gives them their cut is up in the air. (Note: this was my first theory).

3. J got to talking with Lucy (remember at the family meeting when he asked Baz where the rest of Smurf’s stolen money was?) and they devised the plan to have Marco shoot Baz and steal the money with Lucy, and all three will split the loot. (Note: this is my latest and most exciting theory, though it seems fairly unlikely and I totally see the holes in how it could play out).

4. The same theory as #3 but J shot Baz instead on Marco. (Again, unlikely. And is J’s aim really that good?).

Now that you’ve read my theories, I want to talk a little about the episode and my expectations (read: ideas) for season 3. 

First, I was completely and utterly shocked when Baz was shot. It was unlike anything we’ve seen on the show. Even though Pope killed Catherine in season 1, I don’t remember it feeling as crazy as this moment. Perhaps it’s because we expected Pope to be capable of murder and falling victim to Smurf’s manipulation in the first season. It just seemed likely that he would go that far. In a way, we sort of saw it coming. It was still shocking, but it made sense.

Baz’s shooting was so insane because it was so unexpected. The promo for the season finale didn’t tease any deaths or shootings or really anything, which is why I actually expected to be a bit bored during the finale. And to be honest, I was... a little. Until the end. Looking back, I think the normal-ness of the episode created an even bigger shock upon seeing Baz get shot.

Seeing Lucy and Marco steal Smurf’s money from Baz’s house instantly made us think Lucy set the shooting up, but if I’ve learned anything from the amount of TV shows I watch, one should never be so quick to jump to conclusions. We just have to wait and see.

That said, here’s what I’d like to happen in season 3, organized by character:

Smurf: She was framed for Javi’s murder (I mean, she did orchestrate it when it happened but you saw what Baz did to make it look like she pulled the trigger herself) and was caught with all her fake passports and pretty much everything that could keep her locked up for quite some time. That said, I don’t expect her to get out of jail so soon. I do think she’ll still be calling some of the shots from her cell, but she’s certainly lost a large chunk of her power. I have no idea what to expect when it comes to Smurf.

J: This is the guy who now holds all the power. I see big things for him, especially after we actually didn’t see a whole lot of the smart, scheming J we saw in the first season finale (see: s1ep10 “What Have You Done”). I really want more of J calling the shots. I can’t particularly see him mapping out the next heist because I think he’s smarter than that (and Baz) and could find an even better way to rake in the dough. Although, I don’t want the heists to just disappear in season 3. So maybe J could plan a heist like Camp Pendleton or the Megachurch, but even smarter and better. And finally, will season 3 be the season we find out who J’s dad is?

Baz: All I know is that Baz was shot three times in the chest and I do NOT know how he could survive that. But what is Animal Kingdom without Baz? Perhaps we will see! (For the record, I could see all my theories playing out whether Baz lives or dies. I think some theories are more viable and will cause as much drama as the series needs even with Baz dead, but others not so much.)

Craig: I know he wants to get his act together, but what would Animal Kingdom be without crazy, fun Craig!? It would be cool to see Craig think up another heist, because his yacht heist actually went pretty well. I wouldn’t be mad about seeing him try to take on more responsibility in the life of crime, or perhaps just at Deran’s bar. I just want Craig to be happy. (lol).

Deran: Deran’s bar seems to be the new hangout spot with Smurf in jail/being cut out at the beginning of the season, and I really like it! I enjoy seeing Deran put his heart and soul into something and I really think he deserves his bar and its success. I would hate to see it blow up or something (AK writers, if you’re reading this, PLEASE do not get any ideas!). I don’t expect anything to happen to Deran’s bar and I think if something were to happen to it in season 3 it would be too soon anyway. Just leave Deran and his bar alone. Ok? Ok.

Pope: It’s so wild to me how much I loved Pope this season compared to how much he scared me in the first. I have read the theory that Lena is actually Pope’s kid and I don’t think it’s true, but I do think Pope is a better dad than Baz. I want more Pope and and I want more #JusticeforLena. I hate that Pope has so many demons and I really hope he was able to release some of those once Baz forgave him, though I don’t necessarily think he needed Baz to forgive him because I know he doesn’t forgive himself for killing Cath. Baz did tell Pope “It’s not your fault” so maybe he’ll finally understand that he fell victim to Smurf and her master manipulator abilities. I’m anxious to see what the writers have in store for Pope (and Amy?) in season 3.

Nicky: Did you really think I’d forget my girl Nicky? I think I’m the only person who actually likes her. Yes, she does stupid things that make it hard to justify exactly why I like her, but I think she’s a necessary character. Imagine just how powerful J would be without her. If he didn’t have to think about anyone else, J would’ve been running things from the moment Smurf took him in. But he’s only, what, 17? 18? It wouldn’t make sense for him not to have a girl and I think Nicky is perfect because she’s so involved. Think about it, J couldn’t have some normal, uninvolved girl, because she would never understand his actions or his uncles or the secrets he’d have to keep. The relationship wouldn’t last a week. Plus, as much as it hurts me, I think Nicky’s symbolic in a way. I think she is symbolic of J’s mother in a sense. For example, in the finale Baz tells J about his mother being raped nine months before J was born. He mentions she was on some insane number of painkillers and too drugged to care. Then, once Nicky gets wounded after breaking into her ex-friend’s house (a dumb move, I know) she asks for some prescription drug (Vicodin I think?) and J tells her she already had two, but she demands another and he gives it to her. So, in watching Nicky, we’re watching an element of J’s mom and J’s ultimate downfall (caring). He cares about Nicky and he cares about who got his mother pregnant with him. (Note: I’m not usually one to pick up on symbolism but I watched Sons of Anarchy this spring so I learned a thing or two). And I could be totally off on all of this but I just believe there’s a reason Nicky’s still here, and somebody’s gotta support her so I’ll do it. Anyway, the point of this was to say what I want for each character in the next season, so what I want from Nicky is for her to be smarter and to realize the power she has and learn how to use it. 

And that is all I have to say about Animal Kingdom (for now)!

Deran, Craig, Pope, J, Baz Cody-Blackwell// IMAGINE

Imagine Smoking with Deran and Baz getting mad.

You, Craig and Deran just got back from destroying the get away car for the last job. The boys insisted on setting it on fire..as usual. What is it with guys and fire you always thought to yourself.

Craig went straight for the fridge breaking out the beer and throwing you one as Deran went to get his joint out of his room.

“You gonna stick around today?” you asked him unscrewing the cap off the beer bottle

“yeah there's no real action at my crib tonight” he laughed and sat on the floor by the table and started his usual line of coke.

smirking you set the bottle on the counter and racked up the balls on the pool table and started shooting, making every ball in the pockets

“Fuck y/n, remind me to never play you for money” Deran laughs grabbing a beer from the counter and plopping down in the chair.

“Maybe strip pool” you said with a wink at him you hear Craig sniff hard and pound on the table with his hand

“YESSS!” he yelled when hitting the table. You and Deran start laughing

“So wheres Baz and Pope?” Craig says turning the tv on and starts another line on the table

“I don't know, probably still scouting the new place to hit” I sigh and hit another ball in the pocket.

“Probably, fuck wheres J?” Deran says and takes a hit from his joint and picks up a magizine

You hit the last ball in the pocket and put the stick down “Probably girlfriends..you know” You say and grab your beer bottle “You two could be helping baz and pope instead of getting buzzed and stoned” you sigh sitting on Derans lap

“And..you could be helping them to but boss man baz said to finish the vehicle” Deran states and leans back

“mmhumm” you mumble and take the joint from him and put it between your lips “I am helping I'm watching you two clowns” You smile

You three continue laughing, smoking (and Craig snorting) for what feels like hours.

“You are sooo much more comfortable then the couch” you say to deran laughing

“Don't tell mamma Smurf that, that couch was 10k” Deran Laughs and you hear the door slam, leaning your head back on deran you two continue laughing

“What the fuck” you hear and turn your head

“FINALLY!” you laugh “You two took forever!”

“THIS is what you three do when we are out working?? Smoking and Snorting??” Baz Yells

“We torched the vehicle like we were supposed to” Craig says

“TORCHED???” Baz yells louder, Pope comes into the livingroom with a beer and sits down

“Chill out man” Deran says

“Can someone get Baz a drink” Craig says

“Yeah make it a big one” J says finally stumbling in with a black eye

“the fuck happened to you?” You look at him

“Nothing..” he mumbled and grabbed your beer and sat next to Craig

“Pope and I are working our asses off and you three are hanging on each other smoking and snorting” Baz looks directly at me.

Finally having enough you get off Derans lap and push Baz to the other room

“Are you fucking kidding me??” You yell at him

“NO are YOU fucking kidding me” He yells in your face and you push him back

“Don't. get in my face” You fiercely tell him. He backs off remembering how your parents treated you and leans against the counter across from you

“NOW you want to be the leader, You told us what to do. YOU LED US and we listened and your PISSED ??? The Job is done and it was DONE right and quick” You yell at him

“Must be nice, I mean hey i would never trade you for the world when it came to jobs. but being able to chill after a job must be nice, wait for the orders to come, oh and hey! You get to smoke and snort as much as you want after its over, you get me as a boyfriend and a side dick at the same time” he smirks and goes to the fridge for a beer

“What the fuck did you just say to me.” You yell and come up and slam the fridge door

“You heard me. You and Deran, really didn't see that coming. Really my little brother? Your making your way around the family now, whos next? Pope..J?”

Slapping him hard across the face “You think I would fucking fuck your brother..or nephew” mumbling you say “or should I say son..”

“Look at you!” he says with his arms open He never heard the son part.

“I SWEAR TO GOD IF THATS AN INSULT” you yell

“NO! You’re beautiful, you can have whoever you want and however many you want, the world is yours for the taking” He says and it finally clicks

“...Your jealous” you say quietly

“Pshh...what. NO. NO I'm not..Im saying that..” he starts

“OH MY GOD” You laugh

“THIS ISNT FUNNY” he sighs and takes a swig of his beer

“Babe..” You walk up to him and pull on his shirt “I swear its okay” you say and start kissing his jawline all the way up to his ear then you whisper

“Your brother is into dudes” you smile and make your way back down his jawline

“Wait..Wha” he stops “Holy fuck it finally happened” he smiles and picks you up

“I really didn't think you would react that way” You laugh

“Hes my little brother, you don't think I had doubts about him and woman? I mean yeah I thought you and him but..”he starts and you kiss him

“Just..lets stop and see why J’s all banged up” you two grab your beers and walk back into the livingroom where J now has his shirt off and Pope, Craig and Deran are examining him

“..We might have a problem..” Pope says looking and Baz

Imagine being in the hospital and Baz finding out what's wrong:

“Miss y/l/n” a man in his late 50′s comes in my hospital room, I drove myself after feeling extreme stomach pains

“Yes” I say with a sad smile, it still hurts

“Hi I'm dr. Denton I have your results”

“Nice to meet you” I shake his hand and the door flies open to revile Baz

“Hi Ba..” I begin and he cuts me off

“What's wrong?? J said you took the car and left, we tracked your phone here!Why didn't you have someone take you? Everyone was home!” He finally calmed down “What's wrong..?” he says coming to my side

“..Dr Denton..Baz, Baz Denton.” Denton looks at me “..Boyfriend..kinda brother long story” I say and Denton just smiles

“Well, I have some news y/n were you aware you were pregnant” He says looking at the papers 

“what..?” I look at him and Baz stares at me

“about a month along” he says  

“But..wait what?” I say again shocked

“woah woah wait..were?” Baz looks at him and I didn't hear the were part

“I'm sorry..truly..sorry” Dr. Denton says

I keep my head down “that explains..alot.”

“Were you sick?”

“on occasion, nothing major I just thought it was food.”

“..were,,?” Baz says again “are you sure Its a were not an am?”

“I'm sorry sir..” Dr. Denton says “Ill give you some time” he leaves the room

we stay quiet, until I start crying

“fuck..” I wipe my eyes, Baz immediately comes over to the hospital bed

“Its.o..” he stops..”we are going to be okay..”

He holds me for what feels like hours. “What would that have been like..” I finally say “A little Baz running around” I smile and look up at him

“maybe one day..planned..” we both laugh

“just wasn't the right time” I say and he nods

“..Should we tell ma’?” I ask

“..only if you want to” he says and I nod

--------HOME

once we get home everyone is sitting in the living room

“Where have you been??” Mom asks “where did you go?” Pope says

Craig, Derran and J looked up at us standing in the door frame

“..Hospital” I say coming in and sitting by my mom

“What's wrong baby?” she says holding me

“Why the hospital?” J asked looking at Baz

“..I didn't know I was pregnant and had a miscarriage” I mumble and my mom holds me tighter

“Oh baby..” she kisses my head and looks at Baz, all the boys were quiet “How far along?” Baz sits next to her on the other side

“about a month only..”Baz speaks up

No one said anything the rest of the day, surprisingly. The boys ordered food and we all had a family day. Watching movies and eating more food then we should of.

"BOYS!' I hear our mother yell of course Deran, Craig and J didn't hear her. They were to busy shooting each other with paintball guns.

Mom comes out carrying a bag with pope behind her, I look up at her and she's looking at them running around shooting each other and shakes her head

"Okay, I'll be back tomorrow night..keep an eye on your brothers and J baby" Mom says

"I will mom, as usual" I say standing up and pope goes to put her bag in the car

"and make sure none of that paint gets on my god damn furniture" she says getting her wallet out, I nod

"ill keep the boys in line" I turn around and see my girlfriend standing there smiling

"I have no doubts there baby girl" My mom smiles and hugs y/n

"Be good Baz, make sure everyone stays out of trouble" she says holding the sides of my face

"I promise mom" I say and she kisses my forehead 3 times

"My sweet boy" she says running her hand threw my short hair "Here's $1,000 make it last until I get back tomorrow night okay" she says and kisses me again and leaves

"Well since your about to become a responsible adult" y/n says picking up goggles and a paintball gun

"What do you mean responsible?" I say laughing and pick up the other

"Oh game on baby" y/n says and runs

----- 2 HOURS LATER ----

"WE WON. WE FUCKING WON" Deran yells high-fiving J and Craig

"No Fuck that we Won!" Pope yells back with me and y/n beside him

"Tie breaker??" J yells shooting Baz

 "fucking dick" Pope shoots his gun at him

"Even tie until tomorrow" y/n says smiling and everyone puts their guns down

"Okay but you bitches are done" Deran laughs and we all head inside

"Ill order pizza" I say heading inside

  1HOUR LATER-------

Everyone is sitting around the table with pizza and booze. Deren is throwing things into y/n's mouth across the table

"You know we need to start talking and think about the next Job soon" Pope says

I look across the table at y/n and she's looking back at me taking a swig of her beer

"Smurfs call man.." J says

"Don't give me that shit, we are grown men..and women" pope says looking at y/n and she throws the cap from the bottle of her beer at him

"J's right..Smurf needs to be in on it." I speak up

"Oh. So you want to be the leader but lead under smurf your whole life?" Deran says looking at Baz

"Complicated" I say and take a bite of my pizza and feel J and y/n watching me

"Just..wait until smurf gets back tomorrow" Craig says

"Fine.." Pope says and lets it go

I wake up at around 6 in the morning to find y/n not in bed, confused I get up and try to find her. Sometimes we all stay at smurfs house to keep her happy, especially when shes out of town. She likes close tabs on everyone. Going through the house I look around Pope is sleeping in a chair in his room, Craig's door is shut as well as Derans with blaring music in it. Smart thinking on moms part to give them sound proof rooms. J's door is open and hes fast asleep with the lap by his bed on and a book that looks like it fell out of his hand.

 I go inside take the book and put it on his night stand and shut the light off

Heading back down the hallway I finally find her "Babe..what are you doing its 6 in the morning." I finally find her in the livingroom looking at books on the couch

"Just..looking at photos..Sorry" she says with a sad smile and keeps looking at the page

"Which book is that" I say plopping down and seeing the page open to the egg and sperm donor with me when I was probably 4. I close the book.

"..I know you don't like talking about it but will you tell me something about them" y/n says

 "Why now? You've never asked me before about them" I say throwing the book on the coffee table in front of us

"Because. I want to know about your life! I want to see baby photos of you. I want to know what your parents did, why Smurf is the way she is with you! I want to know where you originally came from." y/n says looking at me and I sigh I understood where she was coming from. She was friends with J's mom Julia for years before she died and J came to live with us, y/n didn't start coming around until we were all in middle school.

"Its not good memories. None of it was" I rub my face and she takes my hand

"Smurf took me in when I was 9..I was a little bastered. I remember it as clear as day, I was at the pier stealing food from where ever and whoever I could from. It was almost a week after school got out and I hadn't eaten since then. I was friends with pope in school, he would give me money for lunch every day that would be the only thing i would eat, the egg and sperm donor didn't feed me." I sigh and lean my head back on the couch

"..they where not good people. They would Lock me in the trunk of the car for hours at a time, beat me with whatever they could get their hands on. A Bat, wooden chair leg, fists, a brick once." I could feel y/n eyes on me but I couldn't look at her "they made me sleep on the floor in a closet for years." I continued

"I tried..with them, I wanted them to love me, but..for them it wasn't possible, and after a while..I realized..I didn't even love them fuck I didn't even know what love really was. My Egg donor died 3 weeks before my 9th birthday..drug overdose and the sperm donor blamed me. I would go to school every day with something wrong with me. Bruises, black eye, busted lip, cigarette burns but no one said a word or tried to help me except pope" I smiled a little "you know he was 8 years old and he was brining his clothes to me..just so I wouldn't have to wear the same shit every day. He even brought me a cupcake on my 9th birthday."

I went on "..That day when I was on the pier stealing food, a woman caught me she said [That's not the sort of thing a boy your age should be doing, where's your mom and dad?] that's when I saw pope running up..It was Smurf. Pope introduced me to her and all I remember is her face looking down at me..it was so sad. The next thing I knew i was in their car headed to their house..Smurf bought me clothes, let me shower, fed me, gave me a bed to sleep on..I never in my life knew someone other then pope could be so nice. 1 week turned into 2 and still, no one looked for me. I was helping Smurf in the kitchen one night and Smurf finally asked where my mom and dad were. I said my egg donor was dead and the sperm donor is probably in jail again or just doesn't care enough to look for me."

"Jesus Christ.." y/n said wiping her tears and rubbing her hand up and down my arm

"The next day Smurf Cond the address out of me and went to the house. Smurf wouldn't let me come with but I remember she took a bat from the house to beat the shit out of the sperm donor" I laugh but then stop

"He was there the whole time, he wasn't in jail. All she told me when she came home was that she made him sign custody papers making her as my legal guardian. I never saw him after that, only in my nightmares which I still have on occasion. That exact day when she adopted me was the first time I ever called someone mom..and actually felt undeniable love come from someone. She didn't want to beat me, lock me in a trunk or burn me with a cigarette lighter when i did something wrong..I felt loved. I never felt that and it scared the fuck out of me.." I finally looked at y/n and she was crying.

"please don't cry" I say grabbing her face

"Smurf saved you" she touched the sides of my face

"She did..and I could never repay her enough"

"I get it baby..I get it" she gets on my lap and kisses me then she continues "I don't know how you survived.." I smiled

"Those are the exact words mom said" she smiles and laughs causing me to laugh "I owe her my life..and even that will never be enough"

  "Baby boy you don't owe me anything" y/n and I looked up to see my mom standing there. y/n got off me and sat back on the couch

"your back already mom?" I said standing up

"Yeah baby, it took less time then I thought" she said holding my face "Baby you don't owe me anything..I'm just happy I got you in time" She said kissing my forehead "My sweet, sweet boy, I still don't know how you survived" I smiled at her

"y/n why don't you help me cook some breakfast for the boys" Mom says to y/n "Can do" y/n says standing up and kissing my lips. If Smurf never saved me, I knew i would be dead right now and I was forever grateful for her. But, Pope was right. We needed to make some changes in jobs. How were we supposed to bring that up to her.

Imagine Arguing with Baz about a Job he is about to do

“LOOK! I know you need to do this but it doesn't make it any easier.” You say laying back on the chair by the Cody's pool with a magazine in your hand. “I Know..” he sighs “Just..be careful..and if things go south..”

“They wont. I wont let it” he states

“IF they go south..you get out of there and come home to me..got it?”

“Got it” he says.

“Good..now go make some money” you smirk and pick your magazine back up
