Do you think that Hiccup and Snotlout are cousins in the DreamWorks universe? It's never openly acknowledged (which is a shame, really). But the dynamics of their relationship, particularly in the TV series, remind me of either brothers or cousins rather than just friends. Plus, in season 3 episode 4 of rtte, Stoick and Spitelout sounded like feuding brothers, rather than a feuding chief and villager.
I see Hiccup and Snotlout as cousins in the DreamWorks universe. I’m with you completely: the dynamics of their relationship in the television shows screams family to me. I can’t see them as anything else but cousins, and Stoick and Spitelout as brothers.
It’s true lots changed between the initial production stages of HTTYD and the final movie product. And production planning doesn’t equal final canon. Intents change over time and concepts get forgotten. However, I still see the vestiges of their intent to make Stoick and Spitelout brothers, and Hiccup and Snotlout cousins. Spitelout’s role was once much more closely related to Baggybum’s actions in the books, and they even went so far as to cast httyd-series-audio-book-reader-big-celebrity-name David Tennant for the role. We still see leftover Baggybum intents in the fact Spitelout sticks closely by Stoick’s side throughout the first movie, and appears to be in some position of secondary authority and rapport with Stoick.
The fact the television shows pulls in book Easter Eggs only helps the “feel” that even in the DreamWorks verse, that bit of lore “remains”, even if only in the most indirect of indirectly. Spitelout becomes grounded as Snotlout’s canonical father here. Not only does Snotlout retain much of his original book role, but his familial relation to pseudo-Baggybum is retained, too. Then, as you pointed out, episodes like “Turn and Burn” get Spitelout and Stoick fighting, and while that’s an extension of how Spitelout’s personality has been portrayed in the DreamWorks world, it’s also paralleling Baggybum’s relationship to Stoick in the books.
Little things like this feel like nods to the books and respectful alignment with the cousinly relationship book!Hiccup and Snotlout share. The DreamWorks canon will never call these two boys relatives, but they’re giving nods to the book fandom and who Snotlout is there. I’m not saying that the production teams anywhere in DreamWorks intend Snotlout and Hiccup to be cousins… I’m just saying that enough knowledge of the books squeaked “vibes” into the DreamWorks world.
I’ve got more thoughts on the topic here! (also, to a smaller extent, here).
I hope this hasn’t been asked yet, but what about Snotcup? I know, it’s such an unpopular ship, but I’d like to hear your thoughts. (I personally ship them just a little bit less then I ship Hiccstrid. I’m weird that way)
You are the first person to request this ship, and no worries even if you hadn’t been! Thank you for the prompt. <3 Friendly heads up the two of us have quite the differing perspectives on this ship!
Send me a ship and i’ll rate it
vomit / don’t ship / ok / cute / adorable / sexy / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hell
The interactions between Hiccup and Snotlout are my favorite in the franchise. My absolutely favorite. The bickerings, the agreements, it’s all so good. They contrast one another in an extremely enjoyable, intricate perspective. While both Hiccup and Snotlout have their moments of impulsivity, it’s to note that Snotlout primarily is a pessimistic analyst who thinks with the information before him and makes impulsive choices based upon heroic gumption… while Hiccup is the impulsive, inventive individual who thinks outside the box and acts from his own emotional and moral convictions. They’re constantly arguing, bickering, contradicting one another, bouncing off one another… and it’s legitimately enjoyable. Best dialogue ever. Best drama ever. Best scenes ever. Their younger selves have a bit of tension… but as they grow, they do become far closer and friendlier, and that is awesome stuff too. Great, well-developed relationship.
That said, I don’t think those sorts of contrasting personality dynamics would make a good romantic relationship. Either their differing perspectives somehow reconcile to the point they have a smooth-sailing romance and that entertaining back-and-forth dynamic is lost, or they sometimes irritate one another in the relationship because they think so differently. Either situation I find unappealing.
But first and foremost: Hiccup and Snotlout’s characters are based upon being cousins. They’re family. There’s nothing that turns me off faster in a ship than knowing the characters are related. As sorry as you may hear for me to say it… this fact makes Hicclout probably one of my biggest NOTPs.
I know the DreamWorks Dragons franchise does not have the same level of obvious familial relation that the books do (in which Hiccup and Snotlout being cousins is very central to the plot of Cowell’s novels), but I still cannot shake the fact that Hiccup and Snotlout’s DreamWorks counterparts were framed around their original cousinhood. I feel like sweeping that aside is sweeping aside so much of the internal structure that is still embedded in DreamWorks Dragons storytelling.
The first HTTYD movie drafts hugged very closely to the books, with Spitelout’s character banking heavily off Baggybum the Beerbelly - Hiccup’s uncle. Movie!Spitelout’s final personification still plays the same overaching roles as book!Baggybum does, and Spitelout/Baggybum still has a son named Snotlout… clear indications that the origin of Hiccup and Snotlout’s familial relation from Cowell’s novels never got completely erased as DreamWorks’ HTTYD movie was produced and finalized. So the traces of Hiccup and Snotlout being cousins were never fully removed in the final product of the 2010 movie; the concept of relatedness is still embedded, however subtly, in the final DreamWorks franchise.
People can debate whether or not Hiccup and Snotlout are actually related in the DreamWorks universe, but that history of their characterization, and how they were even built within the DreamWorks universe, is too close to home for me. The concept of “They’re family” is still something I’ll always see.
I like Hiccup and Snotlout as family, DreamWorks franchise and book series. They’re one of my favorite duos, but they’re definitely not a ship!
I haven't read the books and I've only just started watching the series, but I was unsure and wanted to ask someone who I thought would be able to answer just the one question I had... What's Spitelout's position within the village? Do we know what side of the family he's from?
In the books he’s Stoick’s brother (well, his name is Baggybum, but he’s still Snotlout’s father in both movie!verse and book!verse so… same character).
In the books he basically butts heads with Stoick about their sons and who should be the future heir. He’s a bit crass and always game for his son to overthrow Hiccup and take over as chief some day. He’s still a proud Hooligan and will still back Stoick if that’s best.
It’s generally similar in the movie!verse… if a bit less antagonistic. Stoick and Spitelout seem to be a bit more… realistic? I dunno, their behaviors are slightly different here, but generally the same. IMO. I don’t think their brothership is confirmed or anything, but it's semi fanon? As far as I understand.
