The sword of the day is the bagh nakh.

This Indian weapon’s name means “tiger’s claw.” It’s a fist-load weapon, like a knuckleduster, though it is designed to rake and claw rather than punch. Its design meant it could be worn concealed in the palm, though there are also variants with a dagger blade attached to the end, known as a bichua bagh nakh.

Ngl it is sooo cool that the claws you put into the story were inspired by Bagh nakh. Like its so awesome as a South Asian to see it!

Ahhh I'm glad you like them! When I was researching weaponry I saw them and was really interested in the design and their overall utility. Daggers are cool, but it's always fun to give other covert weaponry some shine!

so some things... I have been ‘in the zone’ when i write the Murder Beast Saga, like it basically just flows out of my fingers as I day-dream in the middle of the night. which is awesome. but it means i don’t do quick double-checks on if things are possible or whatever.

like making leather. good news; it was totally something the character could do with the materials they had. and within reason of steps they could stumble through. though it probably wasn’t good leather. they would need to remove the meat from the skin, and would likely have removed the hair but there are, as i would call them here, ‘hairy leathers’.

also the chemicals needed to make the skin leather-ify can be made via a brain-water solution. and the character wasn’t gonna eat brain that day so might as well hope for the best

sinew, like the ham-string in your legs, is really good naturally occurring string that could be used to tie the half-assed spear together. like just wrap that stuff on while it’s still wet and bloody and as it dries it basically suction-wraps like those impossible to remove plastic packaging things

and on to the weapon. it is probably reasonable. look up the bagh nakh. it’s not what i had in mind when writing but it works extremely well. for those that aren’t up for googling. imagine something like how the head of a rake looks, but more curved, and it’s set up to be a reverse brass knuckle so there are little claws hidden under the curve of your fingers.

the improvised bagh nakh is likely more a “helps when fishing” and “grab, don’t let go, make it so whatever i’m trying to hunt has to tear its own throat out to escape” sort of thing.

and yes the character [admittedly a self-insert but i’m not planning on divulging much of anything that is ‘specifically me’ info so] removes the glove when grooming the pack or eating food.

practicality of a bladed gauntlet a la the wolverine's claws? perhaps with less thin blades.

The only real problem with wolverine’s claws is figuring out where he stores them when they’re not in use. They’re supposed to sit in his forearm, which causes all kinds of logistical weirdnesses for how the blades are supposed to pass through his wrists. X-23 has the same problem, for what it’s worth.

There are several different unarmed claw weapons. Off hand, the Bagh Nakh comes to mind. This is a set of (usually) five small, curved blades, mounted on a strip (I’ve seen metal and leather, I think wooden braces also exist), or on the inside of an open handed gauntlet, that slip between the fingers, and allow the wielder to strike with an open hand and then rake the victim with the blades by pulling their fingers back.

There’s also a variant where the blades mount facing out from the palm, and can serve as a combination weapon and climbing tool, though I honestly, do not remember the details there.

The only real problem with Wolverine’s claws is the logistics of actually integrating blades like that into a (pseudo) human body. Attaching them to a wrist gauntlet is a legitimate option.

That said, it’s worth remembering, this is basically like giving a character an over-engineered knife. It’s good for dealing with unarmed opponents, but when facing a foe using anything approaching an actual weapon, like a fire axe, sledgehammer, or crowbar, they’d be at a disadvantage again.

So, yes, they’re practical in the narrow range of situations they’re designed for, and not so much the rest of the time.

The Bagh Nakh a claw-like Indian weapon designed to fit over the knuckles or concealed under and against the palm. It consists of four or five curved blades affixed to a crossbar or glove, and is designed to slash through skin and muscle. It is believed to have been inspired by the armature of big cats, and the term bagh nakh itself means tiger's claw in Hindi. Bagh nakh was first developed in India, though there are conflicting reports of the time period in which they appeared. The first well-known usage of the weapon was by the first Maratha emperor Shivaji who used a bichawa bagh nakh to defeat the Bijapur general Afzal Khan. After the Direct Action Day riots, the Bengali Hindu girls, in order to defend themselves, began to wear a kind of sharp weapon resembling bagh nakh while going to school.
