Bailey(1) - this is a fave image of mine from this photographer, the first thing that enters my mind about this image is from the very well known film ‘ the shining’...a famous scene that wasn't scripted and straight off the cuff of the actors personal character rather than the one he was playing, but fitted so well together!
As for the image itself the tone and contrast appeals to me as i love this style,it had great impact to the onlooker and contrast too with the side lit / 45 degree lit lighting.
Bailey(2) - The image of kate moss is one i will hopefully recreate when my projects goes live, like ‘image 1′ its a fantastic portrait showcasing two levels of style, one being low key and one being high key, my reason for picky the kate moss image to shoot in the studio is because i feel its an area where i lack in the studio shooting high key imagery..not only that but i want to try and push myself in the dark room a little further and develop skills in tonal ranges separating the hi lighted areas to the contrasted areas.
Bailey(3)
A different image altogether from the other two, this i like as when i was visiting the gallery in Edinburgh i loved Baileys series of shots from Sudan, its a style that has always interested me not only with Bailey but with all media and imagery...Steve McCurry is awesome at showing this and letting people see how life is in other countries and the harshness of it all, Sudan was war torn at the time and bailey captured this image of one of the shacks a rebel fighter was living in
Bailey’s Stardust: Exhibition Review
Nelson Mandela 1997
This photo was taken of Nelson Mandela in 1997 by David Bailey at a lunch meeting. Bailey was told that he could not take any photos at this event but he took a small camera with him in his pocket anyway and, by chance, managed to capture this photograph.
Theory:
Although the lighting for this photo was not controlled in any way, I like it as it still shows a good variety of highlights and shadows and a lot of other detail. I also like that Mandela is in focus but the background isn't as the shallow depth of field shows clearly that he was the main subject for the photo. I really like that Mandela fills the space in the photo nicely as this gives the photo a much more natural look overall.
Aesthetic:
I really like that this photo is so in focus, considering it was a sneaky photo and Bailey wasn’t supposed to take it. The composition is really good and I like that the photo is in black and white as it gives it a really good end look and shows a lot of detail. This photo will have been taken in a small format as he snuck in the camera so it would have had to have been a small one that he could hide in his pocket.
