Kuba people, Bushoong group. XIXth before 1893. Exceptional Royal Bushoong Twin Ngaady a Mwaash masks. Collected during the Alexandre Delcommune Expedition, by Dr. Paul Briart. It is the only pair know of Royal Ngaady a Mwaash twin masks of the same origin to have been collected before 1894 and carved by the same hand. These twin masks are danced. Preserved by the Briart family since 1893 until 2017. Rare by their provenance, by their illustrious collector and the expedition in which they were discovered, the quality of these royal masks is exceptional, both iconographically as in terms of their conservation. Royal Kuba Mask, Ngaady a Mwaash. Period of the "Etat Indépendant du Congo" Collected in-situ before April 1893, by the Dr Paul Briart during the Expedition Delcommune. This important Royal Kuba Mask was kept in the Briart's family, from its arrival in Belgium with Dr Paul Briart in 1893 to 2017 without interruption, nor left the family home of Chapelle-Lez-Herlaimont (rue du Dr Briart.) Less than a dozen of this type of Royal Ngaady a Mwaash masks are know todays, none of them can be dated before 1904. After the Rev. Afro-American, Samuel Sheppard in 1888, the Delcommune Expedition is one of the first to have met the Bakuba before April 1893. This Royal Ngaady a Mwaash mask can be seen by appointement.
