“I hate to ask,” Kiku begins, watching Hikaru shuffle out of the room and close the door after delivering a tray of tea. “But I thought our usual catching up time would be the best time to do so.”
The slow start was on purpose; Hikaru seemed to want nothing to do with the events of that last meeting, avoiding any mention of it like the plague and even passing off follow up meetings to him. Midsummer was coming fast, meaning Hikaru would have to face it eventually-- but even Kiku himself couldn’t stop thinking about the incident. There was only one person in the area at the time who could have seen anything else, and she sat before him with the garden outside as a backdrop. At least that gave the room a bit less of a heavy atmosphere.
Kiku heard the rarely-used television in the other room turn on, filling the outer room with the soft, familiar voice of a lead actress. A television drama, no doubt. That was all Hikaru wanted to do lately; stay home, immerse in fiction of any kind.
“You’re the only one I saw around that day who might know what happened to Xiang. Don’t mistake this for anything sentimental, but I have a suspicion as to who it might be, and I also got blamed for it. My asking is really just for my own sanity.”
