In Memoriam: Tim Sherwood as Spurs Manager

As the rumblings about Tim Sherwood's role as Tottenham boss beyond the end of the season increasingly (and unsurprisingly) point towards the end being nigh for the former Blackburn man, we thought we might take a look back at the managerial run that has given us so many reasons to smile since December.  Spurs may have started out their season as one of the dullest clubs in the Premier League, but Tim's term at the helm has brought nothing but entertainment out of the boys from the Lane, with the score at the whistle being as likely to herald the end of an avalanche of goals filling the Spurs' net as the opposition's. 

Tim's prospects weren't always doomed; in fact, things started off rather brightly for Sherwood's Spurs.  A run of good results marked his ascent to the throne, capped with a brilliant dismantling of footballing genius David Moyes.

But the good times were not to last.  The first blip came with a crushing defeat to City - but this was only a taste of the humiliations yet awaiting Tim's boys.  The low point of the poor run of form to follow came with the 0-4 defeat to Chelsea in early March - a defeat that reduced Sherwood to a shell of the vibrant, blood-and-guts fighter we had grown to love, and saw him give one of the most emotionally devastating post-game interviews we've seen:

Even the normally pitiless Special One, in a moment of rare compassion, gave Tim a comforting touch, on this darkest of days.

But Tim, unlike the rest of his team, did not roll over.  He came back with a vengeance, his blood boiling with a fury unrestrained - so unrestrained, that even his own friends and family didn't question false reports of him punching his own players, and he himself admits a trip to the stands might be warranted in the face of his anger.  Tim was a man who did not want to lose, whatever the cost in anger management classes.  

..although, inevitably, lose his team did, including another humiliating defeat to a top four team with Liverpool's 4-0 victory over the Hotspurs to close out March. 

Tim's tragic tale might not have such a dark ending after all, however: with a 5-1 victory over Sunderland in the books and this latest round of rumors perhaps relieving Sherwood of any pressure of trying to retain a full time posting as manager, Tim seems more relaxed, and certainly, his players appear to be behind him.  In all fairness to him and his results, he's also had a slew of injuries to deal with during his time as manager, and the club wasn't in great shape when he had the reins handed to him.  Also, as he himself pointed out and Opta backs up, he (at the time of this writing) has a higher Premier League win percentage than any other Spurs manager.  

Whatever his team's performance might end up looking like in the history books - Tim Sherwood always be remembered in our hearts for the massive entertainment value provided.  In a season full of twists, surprises, and drama, Tim Sherwood and his ragtag band of overpriced and overhyped Spurs players have provided one hell of a sideshow.

espn is clearly getting ramped up for their extensive coverage of the world cup this summer. today they dropped this beauty, a video of ian darke calling a first date. there are some classic lines and clearly spilling wine on your date deserves a red card.

usmnt caputure german youth from bayern.

usmnt to benefit from a player who is serving his time learning from the likes of muller and schwiensteiger?

us soccer and jurgen klinsmann broke news tonight (via twitter) of the imminent capture of julian green for the usmnt. apparently he has moved forward with the application for a required 1 time switch to join the us system. this move, which is required because he previously represented a german youth team in an official competition, opens the door for the bayern munich reservist to potentially join up with the usmnt for some of the friendlies leading up to this summer's world cup in brazil.

it seems like the opinion of the twitter world is that this is a great deal for usmnt, and probably a good opportunity for green.

lots of people have noted that it is a good sign to see more us youth national team players in development systems all over the globe-ranging from bayern to the development academies and mls. for many, green tops the chart due to the run of form bayern is in right now and the 15 goals in 19 games green has scored for their 2nd team. many see this as an absolute coup by the usmnt as the build up for brazil continues over the next couple months.

getty images just changed the game

a new wave of innovation is underway in the professional and editorial photography industry, and it could be like itunes was for music, and amazon was for books.

getty images, one of the world's largest collections of sports and entertainment images, has recently opened their collections via a new embed tool (exemplified in the lower left hand portion of the photo above). while restrictions remain in place on some usage of this new feature, the general reaction around the web is that this might open the door for smaller blogs and publishers to access quality content while removing the need to steal unlicensed photos. this free service could be a fresh alternative to some photo licensing services which can be expensive and complicated for novices to publishing content on the web.

these photos are reserved for editorial purposes, and are also restricted from commercial use; however, this new feature might change how photo sharing works across the web. users on reddit, imgur, and pinterest might now have an means to provide credit to the original photographer/videographer of their post/reblog/repin when previously stealing the image required less work.

brazil 2014 visa information

we are currently working on traveling to brazil this summer for the world cup. this post is the first in a series where we will share the steps we have taken to get everything in place for our trip. this will include posts on visas, match tickets, flights, hostels, and tourist information. and, once we are down in brazil, expect a stream of information from our adventures.

for our first story on preparing for brazil, we would like to highlight the process for obtaining a visa. (note, you should confirm this information with your local consulate).

part of the deal with fifa, the host country of the world cup is required to make special visa arrangements to allow those with tickets to the wc easier entry into the country during the month long tournament. for americans traveling to brazil this means a free visa from your local consulate:

to apply for this free tourist visa, you will need to submit the above documents to the brazilian consulate with jurisdiction over your state. the website for each consulate provides a map for their jurisdiction.

it appears that in-person is the quickest way to receive your visa, with many consulates promising 3 day turn around. additionally, there appear to be some major delays for mail applications. see the information below from the brazilian consulate in chicago for more information about how to apply for your visa once you have all of the necessary documentation in place:
