Lots and lots of practice, and decent lipstick.

I know @basiacat knows some trick about using an eyeliner brush and foundation to outline your lips and that sounds like it’d work really well, but mostly I just practice a lot. I tend to use liquid lipsticks, which helps, but practice means you get used to doing nice, long, smooth strokes for the outer part of the lip, even with stick lipsticks. It makes you more confident in it.

I suggest getting a vibrant, easy-to-see color from the NYX Liquid Suede liquid lipstick line, even if it’s not a color you’d usually use, because they have a good consistency but take about three minutes to fully dry, so it gives you time to practice. Practice with that color like...a few times a week, at least, to get used to the shape of your mouth and confidently holding an applicator. Preferably in front of a 3x magnified mirror in good light.

NYX also has amazing stick lipsticks to practice with. These are also wonderful lip colors to just use in your daily life -- in that pic I’m wearing a Kat Von D lipstick but NYX has a FABULOUS dupe of it in their Liquid Suede line. Also if you go to Ulta and just CANNOT PICK A COLOR BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL SO AWESOME, this exists. Some Ulta stores still have them in stock, but you may have to buy it directly from NYX.

Same practice goes for eyeliner. Long, smooth strokes, lots of practice. I often do makeup even when I’m not going anywhere and I’m like sitting there in my PJ’s all day just to practice. 

I know people who swear by lip brushes for both liquid and stick lipsticks. I have never found them any more or less useful than the doe foot applicators that come in liquid lipsticks.

Now, if your problem is color feathering (as in, the color bleeding out from your lips and on to the skin around your lips) that’s a different problem all together. In that case, I’d try to Basia’s trick with the foundation after you’ve applied your lipstick, or invest in one of these. It’s a clear lip liner that you put on prior to lipstick application, but around the outside of your lips. It stops the color from bleeding. There are a lot of brand options for this type of product, from Smashbox to Lip Tar, but the Sephora brand one is cheaper and works just as well.

Feathering is why I tend toward sticking with liquid-to-matte liquid lipsticks. I’m honestly too lazy for lining my lips prior or after application. When I do use stick lipsticks I set it with the translucent loose face powder that I use to set my foundation, and that’ll keep it from feathering for a few hours, but I usually have to re-apply because of my weird-ass body chemistry. *shrug*

Makeup is honestly an art -- it’s something you’ve gotta work at, and try out different techniques with, and youtube and google how to do different things with (seriously, today was my first day using the Wonder Stick, and I had to google the best way to use it. It turned out great). I’m a novice. I just retain information well.

Side-note, not related to lipstick at all:

Y’all, my makeup box (it’s a massive, massive toolbox) is such a mish-mash of high-end products and drugstore brands. And they all work so well. That face powder I linked to? CoverGirl. I also use CoverGirl/Olay foundation 50% of the time (40% I use an Ulta BB Cream, and 10% I get fancy and use a MAC foundation @fel-as-in-tumbld sent me). I vacillate between using a Smashbox green color-correcting primer I got a deluxe sample of, and the NYX dupe of it (my preference is actually the Ulta house brand but I ain’t paying $20 for a primer, so I wait for it to go on sale). The eye makeup in the picture I took earlier today? All NYX and fucking MAYBELLINE (their Color Tattoo line of eye color is amazing), with the exception of the blue eyeliner, which is Sephora brand, but it’s all on top of a NARS high-end eye primer. The contouring was done with an NYX Wonder Stick, but the lipstick is Kat Von D.

Don’t discount drugstore brand makeups offhand. Every now and then even fucking Maybelline (which I hate on principle) does a good. You see an interesting product? Go check out online reviews and stuff. You never know what you’ll find, and brands like NYX and e.l.f. are just pretty good anyway. (Also both Ulta and Sephora have clearance sections. Check them religiously for great deals. I got a $60 Kat Von D eyeshadow palette for $20 because they were phasing it out.)

Lately, beauty fanatics obsess over liquid lipsticks– Anastasia Beverly Hills, Jeffree Star, Kat Von D, Colourpop and most recently, the Kylie Jenner lip kit. One underlying problem that liquid lipsticks ultimately share is the dry, flakey sensation they often leave. While I’ve been on the liquid lip band wagon and haven’t yet hopped off, I tried something new from Colourpop and I’m lovin’ it! All aboard the lippie stix train!

I’ll admit it, I totally judged the product by it’s packaging on this one. The white plastic tubes and skinny lipsticks didn’t lure me in at first. I thought they would be difficult to apply and didn’t trust the pigmentation. Boy, was I wrong.

I have the “Vixen” collection which contains 6 lippie stixs for $30. These warm-toned lipsticks make an excellent holiday gift! They’re also great to don at holiday parties. My favorite color is the highly coveted “54” a pearlescent burgundy red with sparkles.

The packaging is beautiful and keeps lippie stix organized. It even has a little mirror inside! I love that the colors vary from neutrals to in-your-face pops of color.

These lipsticks are as moisturizing as Chapstick, long lasting, pigmented and easy to apply. I haven’t yet tried the lippie pencils, but the lippie stix make great liners themselves!

None of the colors in the “Vixen” collection are sold separately.

While I’m still a fan of the liquid lipsticks, I have to turn to these lippie stix for everyday use. I don’t have to worry about the lipstick flaking off and my lips don’t feel dry during or after using the product.
