The way his attitude with the Buffybot changed, and how closed off he was with her, showed a really noticeable shift in Spike’s evolution, especially regarding his feelings for Buffy.
The Buffybot was a lie. I like the fact that once he got to be close to the real Buffy, got her trust and respect, he could not settle for a lie anymore. During the course of season 5, his feelings got more authentic, and what started as an unhealthy obsession, with the gross idea of building a bot, grew into something deep and real.
This scene was there to underline that change and how deeply hurt he was by her death.
