Monster Hunter AU Lore ! CW : a little blood ====================
Disclaimer that this AU is new and therefore underdeveloped, so the lore isn't very detailed sadly </3
(No Inkling or vegimals' lore because I haven't figured out what to do with them yet)
First off, Captain Barnacles and Doctor Peso!
While his past is unknown to most of his crew, the mysterious behemoth named Captain Nanook Barnacles Inuk, or Barnacles for short, is a mighty man. As large as any beast that they may face, he is the strongest among their force and acts as the guiding hand to his crew and is their strongest protector and fighter. Although intimidating to even those under his care, to those he loves he's more harmless than a fly, if not a little strict (and some would even say downright tyrannical, but that's mostly just Lieutenant Kwazii's teasings to frighten their newest crewman).
But behind his permanently stoney expression hides a deeply troubled past. Told to no one but his savior, Professor Inkling, Captain Barnacles's former ship, the HMS Monsoon, a decorated war-vessel of the King's Navy, was sunk by sabotage from a warring band of pirate-mercenaries, although the makers of his near-demise are unknown to him. Barnacles was the only survivor of the sinking and his body adrift was later found and drug to safety by Professor Inkling, a scholar having been exploring the oceans at the time.
With Professor Inkling's help, Barnacles (mostly just physically) healed from his experience and was later recruited to Inkling's creature preservation organization as the captain of his new ship (built by Tweak), which Barnacles named the Monsoon in secret tribute to his lost ship and the friends he made from his old crew (who are now ghosts that secretly help them travel safely across any waters, haunting the waves and pushing the wind into their sails, and fighting off any sea monsters that may try to attack them).
Dr. Peso was once a simple physician born and raised in a small Puritan village but had never reslly stuck to their more rigid system, and prefers to align himself with the faint of English (Anglicanism), although he has never been strictly bound to it. It was because of his refusal to mix God and medicine that Peso was threatened his life by the village counsel if he did not change his ways, so he left the and soon enough was found by Professor Inkling, who marveled by Peso's skills as a surgeon/physician, was quickly hired on for the mystical venture of monster saving.
Even if Peso has only been a member of the crew for a few years now, he is beloved by all and he in turn loves all of his friends, although he couldn't help but wish his damned captain would stop diving head first into raging monster claws . . . Peso has bandaged up more of the crew, and more of Barns, than any of the monsters and creatures he's cared for.
Tweak grew up deep in the forests with her mother and father, a witch, and a former witch hunter, unbeknownst to Tweak. Marsh's past was kept away from her for her safety, and because it was a time he was not and never would be proud of. If confronted now, he'll only say that he had no other choice in the matter and never liked the dirty work he'd done, and the friends, and more, that he lost during his "holy" crusades.
But with Tweak's mother being a witch, Tweak has always had a very strong connection to the realms beyond mortal understanding, even if she has never been very talented with spell casting or charm crafting. Although, as a child, her mother's magic dazzled her and she wanted nothing more than to replicate it and grow the flowers and bring the rain and make the fairies dance just like her mother did, but when the witchcraft was found out when Tweak was a no more a girl, Marsh was caged, Tweak's mother was killed, and Tweak's left arm was cut off in the process, but old forces, ghostly forces, an old friend from an age long past, managed to dispose of the witch hunters before they could kill Tweak and freed Marsh, and the pair fled deeper into the forests. Ever since then, Tweak's magical abilities were lessened, so she found a new way to "create magic" through invention, and her craftsmanship flourished. But being a woman and a "cripple" in that day and age made it practically impossible for Tweak to find the work she needed and it hurt her deeply, but ever a savior to all he comes to, Professor Inkling would find her and hire her, and later on Marsh would join them.
As stated previously, Tweak built the second Monsoon and being Inkling's second employee, she and Barns have had many years to become good good friends :3
Tweak has never said aloud that she is a witch since even now she fears her friend's judgment or persecution, but she isn't entirely subtle about it either. Her charms may be crude, and her spells a bit lack-luster, but everyone appreciates all the silent care she has for them all <3
Now, for Dashi, since I am currently reworking her backstory in my normal au, I don't have much of a basis to make a period-accurate one, so my thoughts are very limited . . . BUT, she is the best tracker Barnacles has ever met, impossibly able to sniff out even the faintest of trails in the harshest conditions, and with a very keen sense of nautical direction, to bring her aboard was an easy choice . . . Also, she's MAYBEEEEE part werewolf? I'm not too sure on that one yet, but werewolves and vampires are my two favorite monsters ever so I'm like 80 percent sure I'll stick to it lol, I love myself a giant beastly woman <3
Dr. Shellington and Lieutenant Kwazii!
Now I've already stated and posted a little about Shellington, but to add to it, Shellington is a vampire, not born, but turned. Similarly to Peso, however, he grew up in a deeply devout religious settlement of his own with a wicked man and "kindly priest" for a father. But Shellington had never been very partial to the holy, always far more interesting in understanding the unknown and discovering what was new. So when grown, he left (Pearl soon to follow) and went off to become a scientist himself, although his means for discovery have always been more morbid. In label, he's a (marine) biologist, but in practice, he's a mortician, truthfully, and whilst working by the shore where he lived with his sister and nephew, he was attacked one night by a figure unknown to him. When he awoke the next morning, the sun burned his skin, and he was more starving than he'd ever been before, more rabid and savage than any sane man could be, and when he was finally presented the opportunity, he had his first drop of human blood. When his thirst was quelled and his sanity returned to him, he realized what he had done and what he had become and again he fled, soon enough understanding his condition, as much as he could, and vowing to himself that he would not ever return to his family until he had found a cure for himself, as to never have the chance of hurting them.
Now, he works for Inkling, and only Barnacles knows about his vampirism when he had caught the doctor slipping away under the cover of night to devour the local livestock in their pens like a fox snuck into a chicken coop. Shellington was, at first, horrified to know that he had been discovered and by his new captain of all men. Surely now, he would be slaughtered like the monster that he was, but instead of the great fire, he only met comfort,,, and many questions, but mostly comfort. Barnacles had once been in such disbelief of the mythical during his naval years but with no other explanation to the destruction of his formal life, and from working with Inkling and seeing first hand many things he could no longer deny, the captain had grown into a firm believer, and one of second chances. So he decided then that he would help Shellington in secret, much to Shellington's gratitude, and ever since the pair have been closer than the others could have ever expected from two individuals so unalike one another, although the actual reasons as to their bonding isn't known . . . Yet.
Kwazii was born and raised a pirate aboard his grandfather's ship, the Dabloon, living carefree and adventurous across the high seas. While.. illegal, their lives were bountiful and notorious, but with their infamy came the want for blood, for their heads, and when the Dabloon was attacked and sunk by the King's Navy Hunters, Kwazii and his parents were the only ones able to flee with the saving help from Calico Jack, who sacrificed himself for them to have a chance to escape, distracting the navymen by leading them away into the ocean where Kwazii never did see his grandfather surface again. Kwazii and his parents hid themselves away in the most remote sailing towns they could find, always running, always afraid, but they had each other, and that was all they needed to keep themselves safe.
Until that fateful night that their home was attacked by some... monster, some horror, one truly wicked, one who fed on the gore and pain of slaughtered men. It had crept into their home like the reaper and stole away Kwazii's mother in the night, and when his father chased after them, it took him too. Only Kwazii was left as their home went up in flames, huddled and sobbing amidst the flames, knowing that there and then he would die. But the monster, with fur of a blackened night and eyes as pale as the moon, did not allow this. It took Kwazii and kept him alive, saved him from the fire, and carried him back to its own people, its worshippers, pirate-mercenaries who thought the creature, now changed from beast to man, a god.
The God-beast raised Kwazii then, and Kwazii adored it as his savior and father, clung to its every word and obeyed its every command until when presented the assignment of the ritual sacrifice of a family all too alike his own now gone, now stolen from him, he betrayed the God-beast and stole its eye before fleeing into the ocean and drifting away. He was nearly a corpse when Barnacles found him and drug him up from the swell, taking him in and helping him heal and even despite their enemy pasts, they became friends, more than friends, other than lovers, but partners until the end of all time. (So qpr of them <3)
. . . Calico Jack is dead, having not survived the attack, and now haunts the Monsoon as one of the helpful ghosts, although he and the navy sailors don't get along very well and it causes the poor ship some trouble, never intended by any of them.
. . . A more silly fact (that stems from cult trauma <3) is that Kwazii is squeamish around blood and was never a fan of Shellington's dismemberment work. When he later finds out about Shellington's condition, while he still cares for Shellington as his friend, as does everyone, he especially finds it difficult to look past what Shellington was forced to become even if he knows his friend would rather die than harm a single mortal soul.
Crewmen in order of being hired by Inkling are:
5. Shellington (and the vegimals he found later on)
