In 1749, Claude Joseph Vernet was still living in Rome, painting the city that had drawn generations of young artists south. "The Gardens of the Villa Ludovisi" captures one of those quieter Grand Tour moments. Elegant figures stroll beneath trees, a child pauses beside a woman in silver-grey and a small white dog lingers at her side. Beyond them, cypress trees and open sky stretch into the distance. Before royal commissions and official acclaim, Vernet was already doing what he did best. Turning light, atmosphere and an ordinary afternoon into something worth remembering.
