still working on this mf owl wip
My first and only owl photoshoot, and it is my favourite! Is it the most handsome owl you have seen or what? Just when I was disappointed and tired of waiting for two minutes at this particular small-ish swamp in the woods, this beautiful Barred Owl showed up. Couldn’t be happier… low light, but I think the R5 handled it decently. February is Black History Month and we though we’d share some cool wildlife-related stories about African-Americans and wildlife! Harriet Tubman used the call of the Barred Owl (pictured) on the Underground Railroad to help signal whether or not it was safe to continue onwards. Tubman was an avid naturalist and her knowledge of the local plants and animals was critical to bringing people to freedom. Before the establishment of the National Parks Service, African-American soldiers with the U.S. Army were responsible for protecting our first national parks. Sometimes known as Buffalo Soldiers, their work shaped much of the modern park system today by preventing the poaching of wildlife and plants, making trails and maps, putting out wildfires, and more! Love wildlife refuges? The 3776 Company of the Civilian Conservation Corps was an all African-American group that was integral to habitat restoration for migratory birds and other animals on wildlife refuges during the Great Depression. Multiple studies have found that African Americans care just as much (or in some studies, more so) about protecting environment as white Americans — but are underrepresented in the field of conservation. In the not too distant past conservationists largely barred women, non-whites, and other minority groups from participating in wildlife conservation—and that overt exclusion has had lasting effects that continue to this day—not to mention overt discrimination that still excludes those that are “other” within the field even in modern day. Despite this, black conservationists have contributed majorly to advancing the wildlife conservation. One cool local organization in Roanoke that is doing great work to bridge this inequality is Humble Hikes. Their programs provide spaces for black youth to experience the outdoors safely while being educated in the natural sciences and environmental activism. This is just the tip if the iceberg, but hopefully you learned something new! ☺️ #blackhistorymonth #wildlife #barredowl #blackhistory #owl https://www.instagram.com/p/CaLgZMBsXyI/?utm_medium=tumblr
Barred Owl. 📸 🇺🇸 Went for hike around sunset and as I was walking, I heard the Owl calling. It's the 1st time I've ever heard a Barred Owl call in person. I got excited because I figured it was active, since it was close to sunset. I couldn't locate it immediately, but I kept hearing it. Then I saw movement! It flew to several trees, where it was covered so I wasn't able to get a clear shot. Literally I was able to get these shots, 12 minutes before complete sunset. It flew on a clear branch, but I still had to shoot through a small opening behind some branches from where I stood, because I didn't want to move too much and make it fly elsewhere. This is my best photo of a Barred Owl so far. Definitely happy with this one! 🙂 #nature_worldwide_birds #bird_captures #your_best_birds #elite_raptors #barredowl #eye_spy_birds #allmightybirds #birds_fanatic #birdsofinstagram #planetbirds #ip_birds #massaudubon #birdselite #bestshotz_birds #birds_illife #total_birds #best_birds_of_world #raw_birds #birds_perfection #ethicalowlphoto #bestbirdshots #pocket_birds #birds_private #nuts_about_birds #owlsofinstagram #bird_brilliance #birds_adored #best_birds_of_ig #best_birds_photography #elite_owls (at Boston, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca7Ib9ZIJ4G/?utm_medium=tumblr
Have you seen our sleepy owl friend recently?
