M’Baku becoming king made no sense. From the first Black Panther movie, we know that the Jabari have basically been a separate country within Wakanda since its creation. They isolated themselves in the mountains and had a different diet, culture, and even a different religion (or at least a different primary god) than the rest of the country. And in a place as isolated as Wakanda, they were the closest thing to foreigner most people would have had a chance of interacting with.
By the time we get to M’Baku’s kingship in BP:WF, the country has had 2 kings and 1 queen die, a civil war, half their population disappeared and reappeared 5 years later, they fought off 2 Thanos-led alien invasions, and they fought a war against an underwater nation, all in the span of like 10 years max. After all of that, you would think that this would be a time for stability and a return of Bashenga’s line, but instead the guy who was basically the bogeyman a few years ago is king?????
Maybe Wakandans are just too intelligent to have xenophobia, but a change from 500 years of one family ruling to basically being ruled by a foreign king should have sparked another civil war
My first post only went up until “scene 4″ (per the DVD scene selection). So this might take forever. (Wish I could skip job stuff and do this instead.)
When last we saw T’Challa he had just woken up from the Spirit World, and now he is talking to Nakia in the city.
Coogler thought it was very important to see where people hang out and eat and normal life. They had people come in and cook braai on the set while filming. That would’ve made me hungry. But they say they wanted it to feel real and like you could go to Wakanda after you saw the movie. Well mission accomplished.
Regarding the border tribes rhinos, Coogler says when they were in South Africa they were on a game reserve and met a rhino named “M-20.” So that is what they named W’Kabi’s rhino. Sadly, he adds that poachers coveted M-20′s horn and officials cut it off to save his life.
For filming, a Clydesdale horse was used as a stand-in for the rhino since apparently they have the same gait. They never mentioned that in Budweiser ads. Beachler says the horse was mean.
The vibranium mound is called ”Mount Bashenga.” Hannah says Shuri’s lab in Mt. Bashenga was her favorite set. It was once a giant drill that the Wakandans used to drill with, and it has been repurposed for her use.
Shuri’s exposure to the outside world comes from movies and the internet. Her “what are those?!” joke is indeed a reference to the Vine.
In earlier drafts, Shuri was still grieving the loss of her father and was a much sadder presence.
The Casino hides in plain sight just as Wakanda does.
Stan Lee would joke on set that he liked that T’Challa was rich, so that is why they had him taking T’Challa’s money. (T’Challa just left it behind because he’s so rich he doesn’t care.)
Klaue is a big fan of rap music. Perhaps this is why Agent Ross doesn’t want to listen to his music? (Andy Serkis rapping?)
They wanted Ross’s dealings with Klaue to feel like a drug deal. Ross is doing something shady--getting himself dirty--in order to get vibranium out of the hands of someone he believes is very dangerous. When Nakia says “it’s a set-up”, Coogler points out it is a set up for Ross. They were not going to give him the Vibranium.( In Klaue’s mind at least; Killmonger used it to draw the Wakandans out.)
My Blu Ray skipped during the fight and I’m really pressed out about it. I wish the commentary came with the streaming version.
Car chase: T’Challa uses his claws to turn the car and example of what a traditionalist paired with an innovator can do. He notes that Okoye and Nakia are also an innovator/traditionalist team.
They considered having Okoye’s spear flip the car but eventually decided to just impale it.
Some of Black Panther’s athleticism was inspired by Bo Jackson, according to Coogler. Beachler asks, “You mean like Bo knows?”
“Every breath you take is a mercy from me” is a line from the comics which I knew already but hope you guys did.
The CIA location is a travel agency out front. They are also hiding in plain sight.
Both Ross and Klaue wear blue in the interrogation scene. Colonizers.
T’Challa is testing Ross to see how he reacts to Klaue’s information. If he straight up dismisses it? Does he go to his superiors?
Klaue’s arm is rigged so his crew can find him. The entire group, especially Killmonger, is in blue.
The stunt coordinator is one of the CIA guys killed by Killmonger.
More technical difficulties here. More info to come, maybe?
