Some random knight: look how stupid these peasants are. XD none of them can read or write.
Same random knight: *picks on 6 year old girl in town* pff, Iook girl, i'll give you back your apple, when you tell me what is written on this page.
Girl: *scoffs* reads out the entire page with ease.* You do realize this is a book for children right? As a knight you should educate yourself with books that have less - *she eyes the page once more* pictures and more words, Sire!
Arthur: just as stunned as the random knight.
Knight: who taught you to read?! You're only six and-
Girl: Merlin taught me. He teaches all the towns children. And some of the adults too. Says it's a shame that Camelot doesn't educate their people. And he's right. It is a shame. Farming and collecting herbs and stuff is a lot easier when you know what you're looking for and don't have to rely on old people's vague memories of what their grandparents have taught them once. Now can I get back my apple?
*takes apple and skips away*
Four weeks later Arthur opens the first school of Camelot, making Merlin the director who also chooses the teachers.
And Merlin said he needed educated teachers. He took a farmer in. An old woman and a 21 year old homeless mercinary. Also one blind old man who was spectacular at teaching history. Sir random knight was fired after a week for not knowing math and being bad at spelling.
