would a recording of a rooster's crow have the same effect on a basilisk as if an actual rooster was there? or does it have to be the real thing?

A recording would have a lessened effect but would still have an effect on a basilisk! Due to the quality of recordings rn the effects aren’t as bad as if it were a real rooster’s crow.

However, as recordings get more and more crisp and true to life we’ll see an increased effect on Basilisks to near life-like effectiveness. This is why in the future of recordings, music industry, hollywood equivalent, etc. there’s actually going to be a very strict regulation on harmful sounds in public media.

Actual rooster’s crows will be illegal to record and display publicly. If it’s absolutely necessary for a rooster’s crow to be recorded (a documentary I guess, scientific research, etc.) that project will have to go through an approval process proving that it’s needed as well as be required to maintain warnings within the piece of media similar to warning for flashing lights like we do. It will also be prohibited from public demonstration and use.

So any rooster’s crows heard in media will actually be noise heavily edited from other animals or, for comedy’s sake, being something else entirely, like a car horn.

Since roosters are a health hazard for basilisk, especially basilisk children, are there regulations about where one can own a rooster, or is it just something that basilisk families have to try to avoid living near on their own?

I imagine there’s like a mandated sign that people have to have on their property if they have any animal that is that acutely dangerous to a specific species. I’m sure there’s other monster types out there that have a special vulnerability though none come to mind atm and if that vulnerability is present in a property any visitors should be properly warned before entering that property.

This was actually probably a mandate introduced by the Bill of Etiquette, as before that, yeah, it was probably more of a polite thing to do than a legally mandated thing to do.

I’m sure farms could also request resources from the government when needed, like if a farm is getting visited by an elementary school class they could get free silencing collars for their roosters while the children are visiting. And the great thing is its a glamour on a harness instead of something like a shock collar so it doesn’t harm the rooster either though he might be really confused why he can’t hear his own crow.

I’m sure there’s a training period for roosters to get used to such a contraption XDD

But yeah, before the Bill of Etiquette, living in the country side around farms was a gamble for basilisks :’D

There's something hilarious about a Basilisk who is so clumsy they don't know how to handle any of their arms. XD

Lol listen!! We get it wrong and we usually just have two (or less) arms to begin with too! Basilisks have to do twice the dexterity development as children and keep track of four arms and that’s hard sometimes!! XD

Hi! I have a lot of questions about Basilisks! 1. Do Basilisks swallow their prey whole? 2. Are Basilisks cold-blooded? And if so 3. Do Basilisks have to sunbathe to increase body temp.? 4. Does an aquatic Basilisk have gills, or can hold their breath for a long time? Or are they like Anacondas and just float across water? 5. Do Basilisks have to brumate? Or at least the ones that go through cold weather.

I need to make a basilisk FAQ sheet for sure XD 1. So no! Their jaws don't hing like that, it's more about expanding out width wise and a little unhinged downward to make room for their fangs that come down from the palate. That design is solely for the fangs, how they eat is otherwise normal if taking bigger (ruder!) bites than others could.

2. Nope! they're warm-blooded if a little cooler in temperature than a human so they might want to bundle up a bit more than others. (so that answers 3)

4. No aquatic basilisks! There are, of course, ones that are better at swimming/that's a part of their culture, so they don't have gills, but can train up their lungs to hold a longer breath and, since they have slightly larger lungs can hold their breath for longer than some other species. (That being said, hellhounds also have more efficient lung capacity that goes in tandem with the use of their coal so they, too, can hold their breath longer than some other species.)

5. Nope! They're fine in cold weather (again, just bundle up a little more/take someone else's body heat)

How sensitive are basilisk tails? Do they range from 'hold my tail in a crowd so we don't get separated' to 'you must be level 4 friend to touch this appendage'? We know they can be whipped, but how much motor control do they usually have? Are they just for balance or can they be used for sneaky thievings literally behind someone's back?

I think it really depends on the individual in combination with the type of tail they have. Some basilisks maybe just don’t have as many nerves in their tail so are fine with the crowd situation while others might be super sensitive and would prefer if you just don’t. I think frilled and spined tails will naturally be more sensitive than whip-like and clubbed tails.

Same goes for the motor control. I wouldn’t compare them to, like, monkey tails, where they can hang from a tree, and the only tail I would say would be dexterous enough to do any kind of sneaky thieving would be the whip-like one and even then has to have very specific aids--like picking up a key with a large handle to slip the tip of the tail through, or mug with a handle, it works but picking up something with no grip like that isn’t going to go well.
