Announcement: The Future of When it Hungers

Hi everyone!

During this hiatus period, I've been doing a lot of work in the background and wanted to fill you in on some of the changes we're going to see going forward!

First: When it Hungers' age rating is changing!

The game will be considered 16+, this is something I've been thinking of for a long time, and which I believe was a mistake to not make a decision on from the beginning.

Act 1 will remain up on dashingdon for all, but interacting with the twine version will be 100% 16+ only, and I'd appreciate it if this was honored all around.

Second: Act One is being re-written!

Act one isn't done, but I've lost motivation to keep writing it in its current state when I have a lot of changes that I want to make. As I move things to twine they will be re-written into second draft format before moving on to act two!

That means that the dashingdon version will remain as is. When I get to the same scenes in the re-write I'll update the cscript version in order to complete act one and leave cscript on, at least, a definitive note.

After act one is done, I will not continue writing in cscript and the dashingdon game will not be updated.

Third: Private-alpha & beta updates.

I was always planning to move WIH to a private alpha & beta after act one, this is still true! When act one is done there will be no more public updates until the game is finished!

Once it is finished it will be available on itch.io in its entirety which I'm super excited about but is also a long way away--this is a long project and I want to treat it with the patience it deserves to deliver to y'all a fun and complete story.

I'm happy to answer any questions y'all might have! In terms of updates, I have no real idea when the next update will happen as I still have a lot on my plate IRL, but stay tuned! <3

Hi!

Chapter 2’s final part is finally here! The update is not a huge one, with 23k words worth of new content added to the game, but it wraps up the chapter and introduces you to what to expect from chapter 3.

There’s not much to say about it, except that I hope you enjoy it!

The update includes:

A birthday celebration

Zanetta delivering some more exposition

A moment of bonding with either Lady Domara or Ajmal

A letter finally read

oh hi! I haven’t played Smoke and Velvet in?? a year? 2 years? is it still going ahead? I know we got a new title and it was moving to itch? but I haven’t heard anything since then? sorry if this is rude or info I could find but I looked on your blog and was struggling to find recent updates :((

No you're fine! Basically since that announcement sheesh.....year and a half/two years ago I've been struggling with a lot of IRL issues and WIH had to take a back seat.

And it still does. Long story short I've been job hunting since the start of the year trying to find something that doesn't eat up all my creative energies so that I can put that energy towards WIH and other stories.

But so far I haven't gotten any hits. The field im in is rife with nepotism and every day I leave work exhausted with no energy to cook dinner let alone sit down and write.

So updates about the game have been slim to non-existent. Truly I'm just trying to get my footing but its hard to do that when the ground keeps shaking, you know?

I hope that once I get settled with a new position I can find the energy to create again. Fingers crossed for 2023 🤞

Was curious abt whether Hellhound voices sounded different than humans, or if their vocal cords were pretty much the same

I hadn't really thought about it until you mentioned it but yeah for sure--for all the species tbh.

Hellhounds I would say probably have consistent bit of rough to their voices--whether that's a high or low pitch rough is up to the voice in question. Just as how every dog's bark has a bit of gravel to it. A bit of subvocals, generally pitchier.

Porcelains ofc have two versions of voice depending on if they're using their mouth to mimic speech or not. Technically speaking, a porcelain doesn't really need to move their mouth to speak, but they do if they're capable as either a learned behavior or one latent in the souls that they've absorbed. So a kind of ethereal undertone. If they use their mouth, you'll hear tiny clicks and tinks of porcelain.

Basilisks--I mean look at that jaw structure. There's a natural lisp there. Some individuals it may be more pronounced others more subtle, but every basilisk is going to be slipping on their s's.

There are mini-explosive events peppered around you can already call isla out on their behavior in the existing demo, and there's a big scene that is going to be a shit ton of fun to write >:D

this will sound incredibly dramatic but i have to say it’s getting a bit depressing being an artist online these days. and it’s frustrating that any time someone tries to talk about plagiarism or art theft people will hijack the discussion and immediately make a million assumptions about the artist and start talking about copyright regulation (which i don’t like and have no interest in applying to art) or piracy (i am pro piracy) and also make wild comparisons and say the artist is basically the same as disney constantly suing people which is just… an insane thing to say to someone who is only making like $300 a month (which is still way more than a lot of other people doing this) and freely posting their art online with the intention to share and collaborate.

it’s disappointing we can’t just… have a discussion about how it’s genuinely hurtful and demotivating to have your work stolen. and yes, there is a difference between an independent artist and disney, in case you really needed that spelled out for you (and disney steals art from independent artists, too, if we really want to split hairs). it’s one thing to pirate completed, published books - if you were never going to pay for them, then you were never going to pay for them, and that’s just how it is; and to be frank, i don’t care about that. but it’s particularly cruel to go on an artist’s patreon and leak their content. and i’m not talking about the money aspect, but the fact that you are breaking someone’s trust in their community and actively harming that artist and said community.

a lot of online art spaces are built on that trust, and that’s what a lot of people are trying to talk about - it’s not necessarily about the money, it’s not about suing people or whatever other dumb shit you all want to grandstand about on the internet today, it’s literally just about trust and respect. yes, this is the internet, people are always going to be mean and steal stuff, but it would be nice to at least be able to have a little bit of trust within our own communities, and when that’s broken it’s just really, genuinely hurtful, and it’s hard to want to keep creating art in a community that clearly doesn’t care about you or respect your work.

that’s why artists are frustrated; not because we expect payment, not because we want to “sue you”, but because it’s just hurtful, it’s hurtful that so many people care more about their own instant gratification than the real people making the art they supposedly love so much.
