Marjorie Ridley, a weaver and artists led a unique and interesting life. Born in Western Australia in 1898 she gained her skills as a weaver in the 1930’s. She learnt off Joan Heath, who had acquired her skills while living on Flinders Island. The material Marjorie weaved was Guilford Grass, also known as Onion Grass. Guilford Grass is considered a weed, but Marjorie found its properties very good for weaving and held dye well. During World War II, the government was struggling with shortages of supplies of fibres, Marjorie suggested the use of Guilford Grass, but its use never became common.
After the war Marjorie moved to the South West of Western Australia supporting herself selling baskets, mats and other woven products. Her work was unique and popular because her dyes were very vibrant, and she often decorated her works with Australiana.
Marjorie was known as a very independent and handy woman; she built her own house along with three boats. In 1984 four years before she died, her work was put on display in an exhibition by the Craft Council of Perth.
Walking in the mountains, collecting eucalyptus, quiet time on the beach collecting ocean washed stones, glass, shells and driftwood...all materials for a new line of nature-inspired baskets (and stones!) Reed was #ecodyed with #eucalyptus for all the color variations. One pot yielded all the colors. Love the tonality. #weaver #basketweaver #basketweaversofinstagram #ecodyeing #ecodye #nature #dritwood #inspiration #dritwood #italy #monterosso #calabria #calabrese #girlboss #foraging #suemuldoonimages #travel #travelphotography (at Monterosso Calabro) https://www.instagram.com/p/B89Tu24opMT/?igshid=1p47nwrknl7g0
