Serenade To Lost Voices
Serenade To Lost Voices
My love of military history has led me to the most fascinating discoveries – of people and their stories. Of those, one, in particular, stands out from the crowd.
Serenade To The Big Birdwas written by 1st Lt. Bert Stiles, of the United States Air Force. Before this, Bert flew bomber missions as a co-pilot with the 91st Bomb Group and was based in Bassingbourn, England. After completing his tour…

February 22 2017 - [⚠️: murder, intimate partner violence] by Sam Tonkin Police are to 're-examine' the sudden death of Ian Stewart's first wife in the wake of his conviction for the murder of children's author #HelenBailey, it has emerged. A senior detective confirmed to MailOnline that the circumstances surrounding the death of #DianeStewart (top) in #2010 would be investigated for any suspicion of foul play. It comes as her family confessed to having 'many unanswered questions' despite a coroner ruling that the 47-year-old school secretary died of natural causes linked to her epilepsy. One family member, who requested anonymity, told the Daily Telegraph: 'We were told at the time it was an unexplained death and it has worried me, it has been on my mind that it was unexplained.' 'He [Stewart] was the only one there when she died… I know her brother and sister have been very concerned. Her mother has been very concerned too, it has been awful for her.' Mrs Stewart, who had suffered from epilepsy since childhood, was found dead by Stewart in the garden of their large country home in #Bassingbourn in June 2010. An inquest held three months later concluded that she had suffered 'sudden unexpected death from epilepsy'. But a new police probe backed by relatives, who have 'huge concerns' over the circumstances of her death, will now look into whether her husband killed her. DCI Jerome Kent, of Hertfordshire Police, said: '[In light of Stewart's conviction] it will not be a surprise to hear that we will be looking into his past to see if there is anything else to consider.' But he stressed that it was not a murder investigation, nor was Stewart suspected of killing his first wife. One stumbling block in re-examining the circumstances, however, is that Mrs Stewart was cremated, meaning the truth may never be fully established. Father of two Stewart was today found guilty of murdering Mrs Bailey before dumping her body in a fetid cesspit as part of a twisted plot to get his hands on her £4million fortune. #violenceagainstwomen #restinpeace (at Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom)

Rural pubs have suffered more than most from the decline of the Great British pub, or so I'm told. Our village, out in the 'shire an hour or so from London aboard the belly of the metal horse is probably typical. It had at least four when we moved there, now it has two and a few years ago had just one. The latter is a short stumble from home. A small pub, with a small bar, a small beer garden, a massive thatched roof, ales from Greene King sitting alongside Carlsberg (or similar), and the distinct reek of desperation from endless promotions chalked up on a board outside. Still, run better than by the previous owners, who once refused to make sandwiches for five hungry office workers with nowhere else to eat. Gift horse firmly slapped in the mouth. [...]
URM, more moaning..
Someone has posted pictures of Bassingbourn on facebook..
Looking through them I get a huge horrible feeling in my stomach. Kinda like it is saying 'YOU COULD HAVE BEEN THERE !'
I know everyone is going to be talking about it loads when I go back to college, and I doubt the others (who got sent home) will care much. But I do !
Why do I do this to myself ?! Reading through those comments will only make me more upset.
