An Updated Zero Waste Bathroom Routine
It’s been a minute since I’ve shown my bathroom routine (almost a year to be exact) so I want to update y’all on a few of the new toiletries I’ve gotten/made. Below is a pretty good summation of what I use in my beauty routine. I’ll do a quick break down for you.
Apple cider vinegar (top left), coconut oil (bottom left), and shampoo bar (middle center): these are all the items I use for my hair. The shampoo bar is the best alternative I’ve found to liquid shampoo, and the apple cider vinegar keeps my hair smooth and shiny. I use the coconut oil less frequently but it nourishes my scalp whenever it becomes flaky. I work about a tablespoon in and leave for 10-20 minutes before I hop in the shower to wash it out.
Stainless steel razor and soap bar (bottom right) and lotion (top right): I no longer use shaving cream as soap does the trick. I’ve had the razor for a year now and it works great! I bought 10 blades at the time of purchase and I still have around 7 left. As for lotion, I won the above Cocoon Apothecary lotion in a giveaway and I use it to rub on my legs after shaving to keep them nice and moisturized.
Mouthwash, activated charcoal and bamboo toothbrush: I’ve been using this activated charcoal from The Greenroot for a few months now and it keeps my teeth feeling nice and clean. I’ll let you know what the dentist says when I go visit! BambooHerb sent me this toothbrush and it works just fine - I’ve been using bamboo toothbrushes for the last few years and they’re pretty much all the same tbh! But if you want a little discount from BambooHerb use the code SUSTAIN10 for 10% off ;) Finally, this mouthwash I use is a recipe from WasteLand Rebel, which I put into an old soda bottle.
Seed Phytonutrients sent me some of their moisturizer (left) to test out and it smells so lovely! While not totally plastic free (there’s a thin plastic bag on the inside to hold the lotion), it does have 60% less plastic than conventional bottles. It’s also organic and includes a seed packet inside the bottle to encourage you to compost the outer layer.
Note: while Seed does not test on animals, they are funded by parent company L’Oreal. After doing some research, I learned that L’Oreal as a company does not test on animals EXCEPT in countries required by law (i.e. China), which they pay another company to do. (If I missed some info in my research, let me know below as I’d hate to give improper information.)
Last but not least, I use homemade deodorant from this recipe and use a DivaCup for my period :) I’ve had it for the last 3 years and I’ve never had any problems with it!
Some disclosure: I received the Seed Phytonutrients lotion for free/big discounts for the activated charcoal and the bamboo toothbrushes, and was encouraged to write about these items on my blog (they all work great, but just wanted to be transparent with y’all!). What are your zero waste bathroom staple items? Let me know!
Xoxo, Sabs
