A fun side project while at work— Battle Bond Pokemon should be far more embraced I feel it’s such untapped potential :)

The fact battle bond is retconned so much I think personally pains me so bad because it’s like thematically the best gimmick they could have had next to Mega Evolution itself, like having a bond so damn strong with your original partner that you quite literally get in rhythm with one another, breach any barriers you used to have, and take on equal responsibility for both the commanding and fighting parts of the battle together

For most battles, the trainer and Pokémon have roles they cannot switch from, the trainer commands the moves, and the Pokémon executes them. It’s a bond required activity where you have to be good partners in order to affectively battle, and what makes battle bond so peak to me is that for once, the trainers and Pokémon can see the others perspective. The trainer has to learn how to move like the Pokémon does, and the Pokémon needs to learn how to execute commands in the bonded state on a near split second level. It’s like a cultural exchange in a way, and I especially feel the fact that they share pain when hit adds to that in a way even Mega Evolution doesn’t achieve. In Mega Evolution, it’s only the Pokémon at risk of unnecessary pain, it’s one sided, compared to Battle Bond where you need to learn how to get through shared pain together. The pain we share is worth it because we’re going through it together

Tldr Battle Bond as like an extra rare and more intense variant of Mega Evolution is canon in my heart and soul and I am staring through game freak’s writers room window like a dog begging to be let inside so I can specifically write Battle Bond related stories for the series

Hot take: I never minded that Mega Evolution was retconned to have negative effects in Gen7, it could have been better hinted at in the previous Gen, but it makes a lot of sense considering you have a conversation with Sycamore late in XY where he theorized Mega Evolution was born of the energy of the Ultimate Weapon irradiating evolutionary stones. If what Sycamore theorized is true, then that corruptive effect reads like the suffering and death of those Pokemon used to power the Weapon seeped into those stones too.

It's why I hope they finally expand on the Battle Bond mechanic in ZA, give us a guilt-free, natural Mega equivalent. I always hated how they built it up in the anime only to sweep it under the rug later 💀
