ATTACK! Tag Team Champions Bayside High
Just finished watching season 2 of the Saved By The Bell reboot, and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! I hoped it would be good, but it exceeded my expectations in every way. It stays true to the heart of the original show while bringing something new and fresh to it. The tone and pacing remind me very much of another excellent high school comedy, Derry Girls, with it’s faced paced dialog and absurd humor, while still incorporating the original Saved By The Bell’s signature heartwarming life lessons in a way that’s more down to earth and realistic. Topics that would have been trotted out for a heavy-handed ‘very special episode’, or seen as too controversial for a sitcom in the 80s and 90s, are everyday facts of life that get talked about and dealt with by the new cast of teen characters in matter of fact and relatable ways, and with sharp, laugh out loud humor.
The new cast of kids are just as charming and lovable as the originals, and the inclusion of the original cast members is key to making it feel like a true continuation rather than a replacement. Even though the new show pokes gentle fun at the silliness of the original, it’s all done with affection by people who obviously know and love the show as much as we superfans do. The references to the original show add another layer of humor for the old school fans, but the show can still stand on it’s own merits for any newcomers to appreciate without needing to see the original.
The viewers who get the most out of the show are definitely those of us who grew up with the original though. Seeing the original characters again is like seeing old friends, and the updating and expanding of the world of Bayside feels like coming home and going to wonderland all at the same time. The continuation of the original gang’s journeys is a delight, particularly for series regulars Jessie and Slater. Their evolution as characters feels very real, and seeing Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez bring their characters to a new show with a different tone after all these years, without losing the essence of those characters, underscores how talented (and underrated) of actors they really are.
This new Saved By the Bell has the perfect mix of brains, humor and heart that can make you laugh out loud and get a little teary from feels in the very same episode. Personally, I’ve been going through the hardest few months of my life while watching this show, and it’s been the only thing that could make me smile or laugh some days. Saved By the Bell was a big part of my childhood, and it’s always made me happy to revisit a rerun or two when I needed a mood boost. Having this new show now is like being wrapped in my happy place when I needed it the most. I’m so glad it’s continuing to live on and bring it’s goodhearted spirit to a new generation. I hope they make more seasons, because I could use more Bayside in my life.
