Beside Baze’s presence he hears a quiet, steady pat of something against the bed. He reaches out and across and yanks is hand back-he doesn’t remember any part of Baze being quite so hairy. Or rather, furry.
“Baze,” he whispers as he rolls away from the thing and onto the floor. Who knows what kind of creature has gotten into their room and while Chirrut gladly takes care of any insects-Baze won’t admit he’s afraid but Chirrut can taste it in the air-he leaves anything larger to him.
“Hm? What? What’s wrong?” he asks. His voice is still rough and slow from sleep but that doesn’t mean anything for the rest of him. The bed creaks. The patting sound speeds up.
“There’s something on the bed with you.”
He hears him turn and then turn back with a sigh, “you were dreaming, there’s nothing there.”
“But I still hear it,” he furrows his brow as he concentrates but he can’t discern what the thing is, just that it’s there. He trusts Baze, of course, and so he climbs back into the bed though his hands still seek the creature.
“Let me check your ears,” Baze says before his hands are on Chirrut’s jaw and turning his head one way and then another. He feels urgent somehow but not scared even as he moves past Chirrut and comes back, “I’m just using a light.”
“My ears work perfectly well.”
Baze grunts and brushes his thumb over the shell of his ear, “does anything hurt?”
“Oh please, I told you-“
“There’s something here,” Baze interrupts and Chirrut dodges his attempted attack, “what?”
“I know you’re going to stick your wet finger in my ear, Baze Malbus, you’ve tried this for 30 years and I’m not going to let it work now.”
He chuckles and Chirrut hears him wipe his hand on the sheets, “checking the other one.”
It’s not a surprise to him that he’s pronounced his usual-perfectly healthy, a perfect nuisance-but he still hears the sound though it’s gone back to its previous slow and steady rhythm. Still. Best not to worry Baze.
“Well, since we’re both already awake,” he murmurs and turns towards Baze. His hands press into the bed on either side of him and he feels Baze’s smile and subsequent alarm. “What?”
“Nothing. No time,” he says and Chirrut narrows his eyes. That’s a new one, or at least new in its vagueness.
“Something is wrong. What is it?”
“Nothing,” Baze says. He tries for gruffness but he rarely succeeds where Chirrut is concerned.
It’s all right; he’s woken enough that he knows what the sound is. Or at least, he knows what it might be.
“Baze, when did we get a cat?” he asks. The silence is answer enough that he’s right, but Baze wouldn’t hide something so insignificant from him-if he wanted a cat they would get one. He sets his hand on his chest and feels his sigh build in his chest like ripples in a puddle.
“There is no cat.”
“Then what-“
He sighs again, “that son of a-I was sold faulty merchandise.”
“Faulty merchandise. Why are you being so vague? You know if you spent too much money on something I’ll still love you-it’ll be begrudging at first, but-“
“No,” he says and finally huffs out a laugh, “there is no cat. I have.”
Baze’s hand takes his and brings it to the top of his head where there are. Ears. Animal ears. They’re soft and twitch when Chirrut rubs them between his finger and thumb.
“Well the vows did say in both wellness and illness.”
“Shut up, I look ridiculous.”
“Do you have a tail too?” he reaches for the source of the sound he hears and Baze grumbles in the old language but he doesn’t stop him from sliding his hand down the length of the bushy tail. “It’s so soft.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
“Well I could,” he says and devotes both hands to touching the new parts of Baze. They’re a unique tactile sensation and judging by how he shoves his head into Chirrut’s hand Baze agrees. “Does it feel nice?”
“They’re damn itchy,” he groans and Chirrut abandons the swishy tail for now to scratch Baze’s strange, fuzzy ears. There’s skin there, buried beneath all of the fur and Baze’s usual hair but they don’t feel like they go anywhere.
“Can you hear out of them?”
“That would be useful.”
He wants to laugh-of all people to be saddled with a strange, useless mutation it’s funniest that it’s Baze. Baze who lingers behind him in the market and glowers at any passerbys, Baze who gets excited over blasters, Baze who according to everyone Chirrut has asked looks kind of like a wild man who should be living in the desert. He holds his laughter in somehow even as Baze shoves his head harder into his hands so that he’s almost bent in half, his forehead just a few inches from Chirrut’s collarbone.
“It must be for-“
“I know what it’s for. I don’t know why I got sold it.”
Chirrut says nothing and continues rubbing his ears until Baze’s hands grab his wrists. His tail lashes like a wild thing behind him, “Enough.”
“Are they sensitive?” he asks but lets go. He runs his hands over Baze’s hair instead. It needs a wash at some point, but so does Chirrut so he doesn’t say so; Baze is vain about his hair, though not about anything else. Having ears and a tail might be another thing, however.
He feels him grunt and presses his lips to the top of his head, “we’ll stay in today.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
“Then you take the day off.”
Baze huffs and Chirrut knows without him saying so that that’s a no go too. Even if he went alone he would find Baze at his side before midday and be glad for it too. Just sitting in their room, safe, feels better having Baze here where he can reach out and touch him.
“I’ll find a hat or scarf.”
“I’m sure that even with an extra set of ears you’re intimidating,” he breathes. “Terrifying,” he continues and pretends to swoon backwards, the back of his and pressed to his brow.
Baze catches him and kisses where his neck meets his shoulder, “Shut up.”
They get dressed and head out to their usual spot in the marketplace. Cat ears or not, no one bothers to try anything with Baze and if Chirrut occasionally gives him ear rubs well, no one mentions having seen it.
Just Hera and Baze talking about their blind Jedi boyfriends "'He always gets into trouble, especially with the Empire."' "'I know, right!? And I always have to rescue him!"' "'How does he move so fast?! He can see!"' But in the end they talk about how great they are and how much they love then. Meanwhile Chirrut and Kanan get into fights with any and every Empire soldier in the area.
things i have thought about a lot because i work in a movie theater and listen to Rogue One roughly ten times a week:
when they get to Scarif and Chirrut asks if Cassian has a killers face, k2 says “his weapon was in sniper configuration.” k2 clearly only likes Cassian, so why does he say this? it seems like a small betrayal, almost. is he trying to get Jyn to follow? does k2 care about Cassian’s morals - is he thinking about how Cassian will feel after this? he may already have been able to tell that Cassian has doubts about his orders, so is he trying to stop it? am i thinking too much about how robots feel??
On Jedha, Chirrut tells Baze “the force did protect me” and Baze says “I protected you!” on Scarif, Chirrut says “i’m going with Jyn” and Baze says “alone? good luck!” and immediately follows when Chirrut says “i don’t need luck, i have you!” not only is this sneaky af, it is some TOP NOTCH CERTIFIED MARRIED SHIT, poor Baze, he’s a total sucker and i love them
I kind of came up with this story when I couldn’t sleep one night. It’s nothing fancy but I want to share it with you guys. Its an AU with Rogue One plot but Chirrut and Baze have a child because they’d be perfect fathers.

- It was Chirrut who first noticed her. It was always Chirrut who noticed the most important things. A small girl begging for food at the gate of the holy city. “Where are your parents?” He asked her. “The soldiers in white killed them.” She said quietly. Baze looked at Chirrut and knew what they were going to do.
- “Just close your eyes, Eli, and feel the force.” Chirrut said and held his daughter’s hand. “Say with me. I’m one with the Force, the Force is with me .” Baze sighed deeply “Just let her play Chirrut. She’s way too fidgety to be one with the force right now.” Chirrut held his breath for a moment closing his eyes “Fine then, go play with Baze.” Eli’s squeel of joy made Chirrut smile again.
- Chirrut stroked Eli’s curly hair and smiled. Eli snored silently and tossed around in her sleep a bit. “Baze?” Chirrut whispered. “Describe her to me.” Baze looked at Chirrut for a short while before answering. “She has dark skin and dark brown, almost black eyes.” Seeing the smile on Chirrut’s face made Baze remember why he first fell in love with the man. “Tell me more.”
- “Good night my love.” Baze said tucking the small child under the blanket. “Sleep tight.” He was about to exit the room when a small voice asked “Do you think the Force could make me a boy?” Baze turned around and asked calmly “Why do you ask that?” Eli hid her face under the covers “Chirrut has said it can do great things. Could it... make me a boy?” “Do you want to be a boy?” “Yes.” “Then, my love, you are a boy.” Baze said to his son and smiled.
- Eli woke up screaming from yet another nightmare of his parents getting killed. The door of his room opened and Chirrut and Baze were there. His fathers were there. “Ssshhh, Eli, it’s okay. It’s just a dream.” Baze said sitting on the edge of Eli’s bed. “I lost them Baze, I lose everything. I will lose you too!” Eli cried holding on to Baze’s jacket. Chirrut touched Eli’s head gently. “Eli, you’ll never be alone. Look for the Force and you will find your parents. And if we’re not with you, look for the Force and you will always find us.” Eli tried to smile, but he was scared. He didn’t feel the Force like Chirrut. He had trained and trained but he never felt anything. “Besides, we’re here now, that’s all that matters.” Baze said holding Eli close. Yes, they were here now, Eli breathed in the scent of his fathers and relaxed a little.
- “Now aim Eli, be careful, this blaster is very powerful.” Baze said touching Eli’s shoulder gently. Eli aimed and fired. The bottle further away shattered to pieces. Chirrut smiled “You’re just as good with guns as your father.” Eli smiled “But not that good with the Force, like you, dad.” “You’ll learn.” Chirrut said sounding very sure of himself.
- “There are no Jedi here anymore, only dreamers like this fool.” Baze said looking at Chirrut. “You can come out now Eli, there’s no stormtroopers left. It’s safe now.” Chirrut said as their teen son stumbled from his hiding place. But it wasn’t safe. Soon the small town sguare was full of Saw Guerrera’s rebels. Baze cursed himself silently, why hadn’t he just told Eli to go home.
- “He’s praying for the door to open.” Baze said and looked to Eli. “I’m sorry we got you here. You should be home safe.”
- The city was exploding. They all ran for their lives towards the hovering spaceship. Baze was so sure this was their end. He held the hands of his husband and son. But they made it to the ship and they made it out of the planet. Chirrut lifted his head up and said “I’m happy you weren’t home, son.”
- “Dad I want to come with you to Scarif! I can help!” Eli argued. “No, Eli, it’s too dangerous. You’re too young. Stay with the rebellion. We will come back.” Chirrut said with a strict voice. Eli opened his mouth but Baze stopped him before he could say a word “You’ll be safe here. Just stay. Next time you can help.” Eli watched his fathers board a ship and leave.
- “I’m one with the Force the Force is with me, I’m one with the Force the Force is with me...” Baze didn’t want to believe his gut feeling, but he knew this would be the end. Chirrut would be dead and so would him. They would never see their son again. Everything happened too fast. Baze looked at Chirrut take his last breath and then nothing mattered. He was going to die, so why not die fighting. But it wasn’t the same anymore. He didn’t have the strength to put his all into it. In the end he turned to look at his husband and his last thoughts before getting blown up by the grenade were “I’m sorry Eli, for lying we would be back.”
- Eli stopped mid step. He felt like he couldn’t breathe. He felt like all the light in the world had been sucked out of his life. He stumbled onto his knees. “What is it Eli?” Asked the rebel girl next to him. “I felt it, the Force.” He whispered. “My fathers are dead.”
