You look over your room, It was clean. Only because you had cleaned it twice in anticipation for Steve the hair Harrington to come over to your house. The idea seemed foreign to you, odd and uncomfortable yet still a part of you didn’t oppose it. A small part, a part of you that you despised for enjoying any part of this scheme.
Running your hand over your face you let out a sharp exhale, letting your shoulders drop as you walk out of your room to grab the pizza you put in the oven. Pulling it out and placing the tray on the counter you took a long look around the house.
It was clean, cleaner than it had ever been especially with your mom often making it messy due to how tired she often was after long hospital shifts and you realised something. Something new and possibly worrying.
You had never put this much effort into someone coming over, ever. Not to any of your friends yet somehow for Steve it felt like you had to, you were about to talk about the details of your “relationship” after all.
A knock on your door shocked you out of overthinking. The knock came in the same way Steve would knock on your locker to get your attention, 3 short knocks, 2 slow. That knock had weaved its way into your mind so that you could recognise it a mile away.
Walking towards the front door you opened it to see Steve in a brown sweater and Jeans, he smiled at you as you opened the door before stepping in as you closed it behind him.
“Hey, uhm I have pizza but we can go to my room”
You spoke quickly, awkward, clearly trying to figure out how you felt about the whole situation. Steve just smiled and grabbed the pizza, placing three slices each on two plates before following you to your room.
You watched as his eyes raked over your room, worried that he may not like it or think that it was too much but instead he just sat down on the bed and looked up at you waiting for you to join him.
Sitting down on your bed Steve’s knee brushed yours and you immediately tensed up, the touch was nice but it wasn’t something you were used to.
“So where do we start?” You asked.
“Well first we need to set some rules.”
“Like- okay are you okay with me kissing you?”
Your eyebrows shot up at the question, nearly choking on your pizza before taking a deep breath and blinking rapidly at him but Steve simply laughed at your reaction.
“I mean uhm we kind of have to? To convince people?”
“Yeah, okay I’ll kiss you only when we need to okay to keep you comfortable” Steve smiled.
He was always so considerate when it came to the things you were comfortable with, knowing you were often very shy when it came to talking to people let alone kissing them.
“What?” Steve asked, not surprised, just confused at the sudden thought.
“I mean- you always hold your girlfriends hands so I need to be the same! Also I get really nervous and then my hands get crazy when I talk and they start shaking so I think-“
Steve cuts you off by placing a hand over yours, his warm hand closed over yours which you realised was now balled into a fist and your nails were digging into your palm.
You move your eyes down to stare at your hands intertwined as Steve gently pulls your fingers away from your palm to prevent you from hurting yourself with how hard you were clutching your hand into a fist. The action was small, barely noticeable but it meant that he noticed, he always did.
“Okay so we can kiss occasionally, I’ll hold your hand, and I’ll pick you up before and after school, Ill drive you,”
You nod in response, leaning back onto your bed, taking another bite of your pizza before Steve pulls out a sheet of paper with writing on it.
“You really came prepared”
Steve laughed in response before opening it up and beginning to read it to you.
“We started dating 2 days ago, just before I helped you with Billy so it made sense why I did that. We learned we liked each other while we worked at Scoops.”
“What do you mean no? It’s a great plan!” Steve looked at you shocked and mildly offended that you didn’t like his plan.
“Steve I wouldn’t let you hold my hand if we just started dating”
“We need to have been dating for at least 2 weeks.”
“Okay, but do you not want to hold hands then?”
You pause for a moment, thinking about it. Your eyes travel back down to your hand still closed in Steves and somehow that doesn’t feel uncomfortable to you . You never let people hold your hand, not until you had known them for a long time and while you had been working with Steve for a while you never really talked outside of that.
But the thought of fake dating him and not holding hands also made you uncomfortable.
“No it’s okay” you smile gently at Steve
Steve nods before crossing out a section of writing on the paper and re-writing it.
“So we’ve been dating for 2 weeks, we started liking each other while working at Scoops and I’ll drive you to and from school.”
You nod at this, it was good enough.
“We need to know things about each other”
“Yea” Steve exhales, leaning back on the bed.
“My favourite colour is blue”
“Mine is red” you say quickly making sure to remember his favourite colour.
You both continued telling each other things about yourselves until the sun began to set. Somehow, unbeknownst to you, there was no uncomfortable feelings throughout this whole interaction.
Something foreign to you as telling people about yourself was not something you did often, but Steve made it easy, and that thought scared you.
“I’ll pick you up tomorrow” Steve smiles before walking out of the door and into his car.
You stand there for a moment watching him drive away before shutting the door tight. Turning around and pressing your back to the door you let out a deep exhale.
This was dangerous, getting this close to him knowing it was all fake. It was all a means to an end you remind yourself but that doesn’t quite sit right with you.
You wake up in a rush, shooting out of bed and immediately throwing on an outfit. Which you quickly took off and tried on a different one, and another, and another until you had about 5 outfits on the floor of your bedroom.
“Oh god” You sigh looking at the mess.
It’s just Steve, the same boy you’ve worked with for months, the same boy you were FAKE dating. It shouldn’t be a big deal, yet somehow you knew it was.
Finally you picked out a white tank top and blue jeans before doing your makeup and walking out to the kitchen, your mother was out because of an early shift at the hospital so you were all alone.
Walking to the kitchen you paused at the sound of Steves knock. Looking down at the time your eyes widened realising you only had 20 minutes until class started. You quickly walked to the door and opened it, the cold hands sending a shock to your hand.
“Hey!” You say quickly, letting him in.
“Hey? What’s up why are you rushing?” Steve looks at you confused noticing a pile of notebooks still on your desk.
“Sorry I was about to get breakfast and I didn’t see the time” You apologise quickly.
“Okay, you put the books you need in your bag I’ll make you something.”
He was so sweet, so kind abut you probably making him late as well. And that was not good, that kinds was only going to make you enjoy his company more which is not good, not good at all.
“No it’s okay let’s just go” You say grabbing your books and shoving them in your bag.
“Sit down Y/N” He say sternly, not angry not even mildly frustrated but a statement. He was not letting you out of this house until you ate something.
You sigh before slumping down on your couch, watching him carefully as he walks into your kitchen and disappears behind the wall. You sit there fiddling with your fingers for a few minutes before you hear him coming back.
Looking up you see Steve standing there with a plate consisting of a slice of toast and scrambled eggs. He has his hand behind his neck wearing a sheepish smile.
“Sorry I couldn’t find your eggs”
You only smile at this, taking the plate and biting the toast quickly, you take a forkful of eggs as Steve sits down next to you.
He turns to face you and smiles, that smile makes your heart beat a million times a second and you can’t help but wish he would smile at you like that every day.
After finishing the food you look down at your watch and see you have 5 minutes to get to school.
“Hey its okay when I drive it’s only 3 minutes away”
His words don’t seem to register and you frantically put the plate down and swing your bag over your shoulder, it harshly hitting your back as you turn to got to the door. But, before you could reach it you feel Steve’s hand holding your wrist.
You freeze before harshly pulling away from him as pain spreads throughout your hand, the bruise hadn’t healed you simply hit it with makeup trying not to draw any attention to it but you couldn’t hide your reaction to the pain that consumed your hand.
“Hey- wait are you okay?” Steve’s eyebrows are furrowed in confusion as he watches you carefully, he takes a cautious step forward towards you before looking down at your wrist which is now shades of black and blue.
“Lets go were going to be late”
“No stop what is that” Steve gently takes your wrist in his hand, turning it over to see clearly the bruise that has now fully formed since your last incident with Billy.
Your breathing speeds up, each intake of breath feeling harder as you desperately try to find a response that won’t make a big deal of the bruise that Steve is only getting more concerned about the longer he stares at it. Your heart pounds in your chest. No, no no please something anything that will take this moment away.
“It’s nothing please Steve let’s just go” You plead with him.
Steve looks up, his eyes locking with your and any ounce of anger towards what happened to you vanishes the second he sees the desperation in your eyes. Sighing, he grabs his car keys and opens your front door, standing next to it as he waits for you to walk out.
Sliding into the cool leather seats of Steve Harringtons car makes your stomach swirl with nerves, adding on to the already furious ones manifesting about the fact that today would be the first day with your ‘boyfriend’. The door shuts next to you as Steve walks over to the drivers side. You had never ridden in a boys car before and it was safe to say you were extremely nervous.
“Here take my jacket, I’m not the only one who will be concerned about that bruise” Steve says quickly, trying to hide his obvious discomfort with the fact that you have an injury and are refusing to tell him about it.
Grabbing the red jacket from his Hands you slide it on, rolling it slightly at the sleeves to ensure you can still use your hands throughout the day. The Jacket was warm and soft, smelling like his cologne in the best way possible.
No you don’t get to feel like that, he is your fake boyfriend, this will all be over soon when Billy finally stands down. That is all that this whole scheme is for, to get Billy to back down, after that you go back to friends who work at Scoops Ahoy.
Steve turns his head to face you, hand resting gently on the steering wheel as he watches you, waiting patiently or you to continue on your thought.
“About how today is going to go”
“It will be okay, and whatever happens I’ll be there okay?”
“Yeah okay” You smile gently before sitting back in your seat and bracing yourself for the day to come.
