I don't get off on danger. I get off on a man with strong moral fiber. The closest Barrons ever gets to fiber is walking down the cereal aisle at the grocery store.

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
Becki challenged us to share a quote from our favourite book we read this year. I found this hard; first of all it meant picking a favourite, and then just one small part of it to share. Ancillary Justice is not the best book I have read this year, but of my favourites I’ve picked up this year, it is the book I think you are least likely to have read, and thus I recommend it.
It is unusual. Told from two points on the timeline of an AI soldier (I don’t normally read sci-fi, so if that puts you off, it probably needn’t), it is an interesting story about identity and agency. Also the main character comes from a culture that doesn’t use gendered pronouns, so the gender of the various characters One-Esk encounters are rarely disclosed which I found fascinating and refreshing. It was different and really enjoyed reading it. Finding a quote that I thought would intrigue was difficult, but I found One-Esk’s transition from an I of many to an I of one really interesting so.
It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.
