Had an amazing time at #BBTBCincy! Then I got to stand with a LEGEND! This statue is of Mary Becker Greene, "Ma" Greene was the first woman to obtain a steamboat pilot's license in 1892. She captained the famous Delta Queen, died peacefully in her stateroom on board and still haunts the ship. I wrote a chapter about her; "Still Capaining Her Ship" in A HAUNTED HISTORY OF INVISIBLE WOMEN! This statue and bench from one of her steamers, as well as a replica of the Delta Queen, sits in the lovely riverside park in Covington, KY, along the banks of the beloved Ohio River she navigated so expertly. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClNiQEys_uG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I was beyond excited to get to talk to Jenny Lawson at Books by the Banks. There was a lull in her signing line and I ran with my books and my Rory over to hers, panting and babbling as I dumped everything on the table. I'm not sure I completed a sentence in her presence. Pretty sure I neglected to tell her in person that her writing inspires me to be me--messy and true and my own brand of weirdness. Her writing makes me laugh and cry and laugh again. Her stories make me feel heard and connected and part of something I'll never really understand, but I'm okay with not understanding as long as I know there are people like Jenny Lawson living in this world. And the thing is…I'm pretty sure Jenny would understand, did understand from my slightly manic grinning and babbling just how much her books mean to me, because she's Jenny Freaking Lawson. . Afterward, I was so thrilled with my signed Rory that I kept moving him around, making him peek out in photos and letting him help me sign my own books. One little boy was definitely disturbed by the raccoon poking out from behind my books. He may have thought he was real for just a second. ☺️ But when I let him hold Rory, his whole face lit up. This Saturday, I was honored to share a table with urban fantasy author Laura Bickle at Cincinnati's 10th annual Books by the Banks Literary Festival! Some highlight: A volunteer declared himself my "minion," then ran to get me some coffee. I felt my writing career peaked at that moment. I met the pope. Two folks ran up and said, "You're on our list!" I've been on worse lists, you guys. A lovely young couple were so excited to hear that my books all feature queer women main characters and grabbed all my freebies and bought the book. I write specifically for you, fam! Everyone who asked me to sign their books had thankfully super easy names to spell. Thanks to the Cincinnati Public Library, Books by the Banks, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, and all the authors and readers and volunteers! I had a great time!
