Hey :) I hope I'm not bothering you but I wonder what your thoughts were concerning the latest spn episode and especially dean's behavior concerning kaia.
Hi! So, I finally had some time to watch the episode and I’m - I don’t even know.
Like, what the fuck? Okay, so I think that, plot-wise, it was a very strong episode - that misdirection with Jack was well done, and I like where the story is going and how the worlds move parallel to one another - the problem was, it’s like the whole thing was written by someone who didn’t understand the first thing about the characters. It was like a pilot for a completely different show, or - you get fanfiction like that, right - those stories you keep reading because they’re interesting and well-written, but at the same time you sort of get a cognitive headache, because your brain reads Cas and you know who Cas is and you expect him to act a certain way and then he doesn’t, like, at all - it’s like one of those bumpy rides at the fair - you want to enjoy the thing but you’re also getting slightly seasick, you know what I mean? And The Bad Place - even leaving aside this new information that angels suddely can bypass sigils (and if so, it’s a huge mystery why they never thought of doing that over the past nine years) - well, I don’t know who Jensen was instructed to play during his interactions with Kaia and Patience, but that was not Dean.
Like, for starters, Dean wouldn’t harass a teenager like that (he called Patience six times? come on), especially since there is no certainty the girl can even help them. This wasn’t an ‘I’m sorry but the world will end if you don’t pick up’ - it was a shot in the dark, aimed at someone who’d already lived through a very traumatic experience - someone to whom Dean had said, quite clearly and only a few weeks ago, that the hunting life will destroy you, so stay the hell out.
(Now, that was Dean: honest and direct and randomly vulnerable and looking out for others even when he’s been turned inside out with grief.)
And as for Kaia - I couldn’t find out how old Yadira is, but that girl looks about twenty, and that’s generous - and Dean had already learned quite a few things about her life by the time he decided it was a good idea to wave a gun in her face (he and Sam presumably read her emails to Dexter, and they had to know, or at least suspect, why she was in that rehab centre, not to mention they’d managed to dredge up her entire life history - misery after tragedy after misery - and she’d told them to their bloody faces about her nightmares and scars and whatever else). So to me - there’s no way. The Dean I’ve got in my mind, which is the person this show’s been building with loving care for thirteen years, would never threaten a teenager in that way. Nope. The closest we ever got to something like this was Dean killing the Stynes boy, and that was not him - he was cursed and half out of his mind and I’m beyond annoyed that murder never came up again, but the point of having Dean acting so unDeanly was precisely to show how far gone and unlike himself he was. What’s the excuse now? Dean is fine, or as fine as he ever gets. The second he got Cas back his grief and depression over ‘Cas and Mary’ was magically cured (and who’s surprised? #NotMe), and while it makes sense he’d want to save his mother, threatening Kaia and using his physical presence to intimidate and terrify a young woman into doing his bidding - yeah - no fucking way.
(Honestly, the one thing that could make sense is that something about Mary’s situation reminded him of Hell - and okay, it was built along those lines, with Mary crying for help inside that Iron Maiden - those are not a thing, by the way - but how the scene was built and Dean’s reaction to it - no, to me that wasn’t nearly powerful enough to warrant a complete personality change.)
So, I don’t know what to tell you. At this point, I’m not even disappointed - this show has its ups and downs, which is a pity, because they’ve got enough talent to avoid those downs, but by now we know that’s how it works, so, whatever. No, the only thing that annoys me is that everything they choose to write becomes canon, even rushed and clumsy moments like this one, which means the Dean who deliberately threatened a scared teenager and pointed a gun to her face is now a Dean who exists in our hearts and minds - I guess it’s up to fanfiction writers to somehow make that version of him work with the rest of his history and personality and figure out how and why this cowardly and despicable moment will weigh on his conscience, because we can be sure of one thing: it will never be addressed on the show again.
