My (probably unpopular) thoughts on American Sniper
Was American Sniper a decent film? Yes.
Does it deserve all of the Oscar love it's getting? No.
My main problem with the film was this:
It didn't know what it wanted to be. It was way too broad. Did it want to be about a protective man? Did it want to be about the horrors of war? A relationship between a solder/sailor and his wife? About PTSD and the after-effects of war? About the parallels between several snipers?
It tried to be all of these things in two hours. And as such, it was a muddled mess that was filled with:
