Extreme Weather PSA for the Greater Victoria Area on Vancouver Island: it's gonna get real cold real soon. Near-record-low temps early this week (today is Dec 26, 2021) due to arctic outflow winds.
For those of you without fireplaces or non-electric heat, please think about how you will stay warm when the power goes out—blankets, warm clothes, hand warmers, and gloves/scarves/hats are all great options. Insulate your windows with plastic wrap from frame to frame (you can use painter's tape to attach it for easy removal later).
Environment Canada warns that hypothermia and frostbite are risks if you're outdoors too long without proper clothing, so make sure to wear thick socks (double up if you have to), wear leggings under pants (or sweats over jeans), gloves, and of course hats and scarves because you lose a lot of heat from your head and neck.
As for other general preparedness tips: Make sure you have food on hand that can be eaten uncooked. If you have a camping stove, never use it in an unventilated area.
If you can, charge any backup battery packs or power banks now.
I work in emergency preparedness so feel free to ask me anything and I'll share whatever knowledge and resources I can. Any of my followers who live in the GVA can also reach out to me if you need anything at all! I'm happy to help however I'm able.
Climate change is having a real and immediate impact everywhere, but we here on the west coast are really feeling it bad this year.
Please reblog this post to share these tips! And feel free to add your own, especially if you're from a place that regularly gets really cold.

🤷♀️When a tree put's itself in the garbage before climate change can do it for them.🤷♀️
Some of the INCREDIBLE shots of the BC Storm last night with rare purple lightning. Wow. Nature is powerful and beautiful. Did you catch the storm? My Rottie tried to fight the storm. If you missed it, here are some of the stunning images floating around. #BCStorm #PurpleLightning #ThunderStorm #LightningStorm #SummerStorm #Nature #Beauty https://www.instagram.com/p/CEAWALBlLA-lP_8tOFg-JKpwf0FGYCwRVTzOBA0/?igshid=he3766m4c9nk
On Thursday it was sunny, and bunnies were hopping around in the grass. This morning I woke up to kids using snowboards instead of sleds. • Oh, Canada. Sigh. • #snow #weather #bcstorm #vancouver
