The government figure is around three times more than a United Nations’ estimate of 670.
670 confirmed dead. Over 2000 buried alive. This might be the worst climate change disaster of 2024, but even worse disasters might still be coming.

Local authorities say many of the victims were killed while they were trying to rescue survivors of an earlier mudslide in the Kencho Shacha
Mudslides triggered by heavy rain in a remote part of Ethiopia have killed at least 229 people, including many who tried to rescue survivors, local authorities said Tuesday, in what the prime minister called a “terrible loss.” Young children and pregnant women were among the victims in Kencho Shacha Gozdi district of southern Ethiopia, said Dagmawi Ayele, a local administrator, adding that at least five people have been pulled out alive. The death toll rose sharply from the initial one of 55 late Monday. Search operations continued in the area, said Kassahun Abayneh, head of the communications office in Gofa Zone, the administrative area where the mudslides occurred.

Cozumel - Ironman Race
The men’s and women’s race are staggered about 2 minutes apart but follow the same route through the trails. You have been training for 10 months to get here and are super excited. No distractions. You are loaded and ready to race. It was about 5 am on race day and some rain was coming down, but lightly. You knew the clouds would clear quickly. Sun would shine today, because today you were going to finish the ironman challenge. You repeat to yourself, no distractions. Even though your mind was stuck on that burly long haired guy from the pasta mixer the night before. Nope, no distractions.
Severe weather in California - will it affect Montecito?
Praying for all my friends in California who might be impacted by this bomb cyclone. Sounds like it could be really bad:
“We anticipate this may be the most challenging and impactful series of storms to touch down in California in the last five years. If the storm materializes as we anticipate, we could see widespread flooding, mudslides, and power outages in many communities.”
Here's a map of where the mudslides in 2018 came through Montecito. The red swathe is the path of the mudslide, and the red circle is the Markle Mudslide Mansion. I do hope they've not spent every last penny on desperate PR measures and frightful failure fashions - they may need to do some home repair after this storm.
Third deadly storm to hit California brings mudslides, landslides and sinkholes
Jan. 10, 2023 - CBS Mornings
Unprecedented rainfall, 4 times above average for California at this time of year. Massive flooding, landslides, and mandatory evacuations.
This unfortunately may be the only way to erase the drought lie of the state.
An Environment Canada meteorologist says the province’s latest atmospheric river has generated “mind-boggling” data for scientific analysis.

Much of California can't soak up another drop of rain. Yet the state is getting pummeled again with torrential downpours and ferocious winds, causing power outages and treacherous travel conditions.
Petrópolis Needs Aid!
tw: death mention
Hello all. As you know, I'm Brazilian, and we have a terrible tragedy happening right now in Petrópolis, my mom's hometown and an important place of Brazilian history from colonial times.
There were heavy downpours there, the one on Tuesday (15) alone exceeding the average for the entire month of February.
Yes, a month's worth of rain poured in a single day, causing mudslides that flooded streets, destroyed houses, washed away cars and left gashes hundreds of meters wide on the region's mountainsides.
Here is an article from BBC on this tragedy:
More than 100 people were killed after torrential rainfall caused flash flooding in the hillside city.
The place is wrecked beyond recognition, houses collapsed, trapping and/or killing hundreds of people whose relatives have volunteered to work along with the fire department to try and dig out from the debris. People are literally shoveling at the remains of their own homes to try and find their missing children, parents, relatives, neighbors.
Business owners already struggling with the COVID crisis lost their shops. Hundreds of people are suddenly homeless, with no job, not even a change of clothes, nothing. The animals, too, are suffering: today (23) a cat was rescued after nine days buried under debris. Many pets lost their owners, and many people are still searching for their missing pets too.
Due to the amount of horrible people daring to try to scam others with fake donation posts, I'm not sure which link is safe to post here, and most of the ones I found are local organizations. However, Brazil Foundation seems trustworthy, is working with to help with the Petrópolis crisis and accepts donations from anywhere in the world.
If anyone knows of other links, please add them below, and please keep the people of Petrópolis in your thoughts. Thank you for reading this.
