Today I donated blood for the first time.
I was kinda freaked at first, considering I didn’t even know my blood type to begin with... I still don’t actually.
Shit, I hope they test that.
Anyway, it was weird. They put a big ass needle in my arm and I barely had time to release a high pitched noise of shock before the tube turned red and suddenly I was watching my blood flow out of me and into a bag covered in labels and bar codes.
three songs later, I was done and got a bag of cookies and a can of cranberry juice.
It was that easy. I don’t even know what I was scared of before, maybe just the overall simplicity of something that seemed unnatural at first.
I mean, your blood is supposed to stay in your body. All that junk inside your body is supposed to be there right? And here I was just opening the flood gates and letting it out.
But as I watched my bag fill up, and when they took the needle out, I realized that my blood was going to help someone. All I had to do was sit in a chair, listen to some tunes, eat a cookie, and someone would be better for it.
So seriously, everyone who can. Donate blood any chance you get.
I know there are all these rules and limitations with blood donations, but guess what! There’s more!
If you or someone you know has been told they can’t donate blood because of their sexual orientation, medication, or sexual history and they were upset by this. Today I also registered to be a match for donating bone marrow. And all they need is DNA. I swabbed my cheek, signed a paper, and I have a chance to save a life. ANYONE can do it.
Your lifestyle doesn’t have to prevent you from donating and saving someone else’s.
