Don't Go Lovely Dovey ✷ Mackiah Mercer.
CHAPTER 9. jiseok more like doucheok! (791 words)
(author note: yes this chapter is sorta inspired by off campus in a way... shhhhhh)
Your finger hovered over your screen. You couldn’t tell if it was your thumb twitching or your eye, maybe both? Well, considering the message that appeared before your screen from a man whose audacity hasn’t seemed to change. Because how dare he ridicule you, for claiming you can’t handle being alone. You can. Right?
Your chest felt itself clench up. Why did Jiseok have a point? You’ve only been broken up for… a week and half? The exact number was already getting blurry despite how fresh it was supposed to feel. So why did it already feel distant? At least right now.
“Ugh, everyone’s on their phones these days.”
You immediately peeled your eyes away from the message from the sound of the familiar accent, panic overcame for a split second as you hummed a “pardon?”
Mackiah froze, his hand still gripping his chair. “Sorry- I wasn’t being serious, I don’t really know why I said that.”
He sheepishly grinned as if too scared to even smile at you before going back to his seat. He gave you a sheepish grin, like he was too nervous to even fully smile at you anymore, before awkwardly sitting back down.
Mackiah finally looked back up at you at the sudden question. You didn’t back down from it either. Instead, you shifted in your seat, trying to seem more relaxed than you actually felt.
“You know I’m still the same, right?” You tilted your head slightly, eyes dragging over him for a moment. “You used to be…” You hesitated before finishing, “different around me.”
Then Mackiah stilled. His once tense position shifted, a hand now on his drink as the other tapped the table. You could tell he had something to say, that he was doing something to prevent himself from talking. Then he chose to change the topic,
You barked out a short laugh. “We've had this conversation.” You tilted your head. “A few times already.”
Mackiah didn't smile, his fingers started tapping against the table instead. “I meant…” he hesitated, “did anything happen last night?”
Your phone screen went dark beneath your palm.
“It’s nothing I really wanna get into.” you quipped. Your once unlocked phone had quickly closed into a black screen before finding its way into your pocket. You hoped Mackiah hadn’t noticed but it’s not hard to see where his eyes travelled to.
He hadn’t said anything but you already felt caught. You didn’t want to explain yourself, especially to Mackiah on what happened last night. You didn’t want to admit that you couldn’t handle being sober with your thoughts, you didn’t want to explain your thought process on why you decided to club so last minute. Explanation felt like defeat, like you’ve been forced to share your weakness.
He remained silent, the lump remained in your throat. Because what if he asks the million dollar question: Why did you text me?
You held your breath from the thought of being interrogated, you never liked explaining yourself. You never learned how to truly express yourself. Jiseok told you that, he told you that your lack of expression always bothered him.
But as these thoughts continue stacking on top of every wrinkle in your brain-
Suddenly you’ve woken up. Your eyes quickly found Mackiah’s hand on yours that wrapped around a cookie you didn’t realise you were holding. Immediately you looked up at him, “Oh shit, did I grab yours?”
“Yes,” he chuckled. “It also has nuts…”
“You’re allergic to nuts.”
Then you hesitated, “You remembered?” You raised a brow.
Mackiah looked at you confused, “Of course.”
“When did I even tell you I was allergic to nuts?”
Your eyes caught Mackiah’s lips form a soft smile, then you realised his hand was still embracing yours. Sudden heat crawled up your neck, causing you to finally let go of the cookie before he retracted back to himself, “You told me two years ago when I offered you my leftover cashews.”
You don’t even remember that conversation.
Jiseok never remembered your allergies.
“This is yours.” He slid the plated red velvet cookie to your side of the table.
“Right.” You nodded before taking it.
“Thanks for taking me here by the way, I swear I’ll pay you back-”
“Y/N, seriously, don’t worry about it.”
He waved it off so casually.
“This is starting to feel like a date.” You tried to joke, unaware of the smile creeping up your mouth.
Mackiah noticed it though, his grin brightened. “Call it what you want.”
He then took a bite of his treat and a sip of his drink, leaving you to wonder once more. Call it what you want? Then your thoughts came back to Jiseok’s words. Then suddenly you don’t know what to think.
Don't Go Lovely Dovey ✷ MM.
You never thought of Mackiah Mercer as anything more than your little brother’s weird best friend. He was just always there, loud, persistent, and annoyingly loyal. Sure, maybe he’s had a thing for you since forever but you never took it seriously. Especially when you had a boyfriend who you thought was your forever. But forever ended faster than you expected. Wounded from a fresh break-up, you could’ve taken time to heal, focused on yourself, stayed in. Instead, you partied, drank, and somehow, you started noticing Mackiah a little more than you used to.
