It was too late to have second thoughts about coming to the Alpha Psi Karaoke Night because here you are, standing rather stiff in front of the bar’s entrance. Riki’s words lingered in your mind throughout last night until now. You were far from clarity concerning the Jiseok situation but Riki’s advice has put you in some temporary ease. And a reality check.
You have to talk to Mackiah.
Maybe soon, maybe tomorrow. But right now? Maybe you just need to be distracted by the sweet, tonedeaf vocals of whatever frat brother or sorority sister is brave enough to perform.
“You made it!” Riki exclaimed as the bell by the door rang upon your entrance.
Lara, Moka and Jungwon greeted you with smiles and cheers. You scanned the area, noticing the rapidly growing crowd. You smiled and waved before Moka wrapped you in a tight embrace. “Thank God you’re here!” she whispered in your ear.
You understood her relief, that introvert does not enjoy going out often. “You’re willing to sit through a bar event for a bread raffle prize?”
Moka nodded with a grin, honestly who can blame her?
“You putting your name down on the sheet?” Lara’s question was immediately hit with your silent glare but she kept smiling.
Your refusal caused her to roll her eyes and groan but she understood that was gonna be the case. You weren’t much of a performer, no matter how drunk you’d get, you would always be sober enough to refuse becoming the centre of attention.
You didn’t expect a lot to come from tonight, you looked forward to the cheap drinks and the entertainment. You weren’t keen on any of the raffle prizes yet you still bought tickets for the sake of charity. You don’t even know what the frat’s raising money for, no one ever really does.
“Anyone excited for tonight!?” a booming voice raised from the microphone, erupting cheers from various booths and tables. You reluctantly join the cheers as Jake, the apparent host for the night, motioned for louder applause.
“Yeah, I’m definitely gonna need another drink.” You mutter to Jungwon, opening your purse to grab your phone.
“God, get me one too.”
You chuckled at his plea before making your way to the bar. Knowing that you’re probably gonna be here until after midnight, you’ll definitely need more than one vodka soda.
“Grape soju and a pale ale please. Actually maybe two bottles of grape soju.” You asked the bartender. “Oh, and maybe whatever cider you have.”
You exhaled as you leaned onto the counter, preparing to zone out as you wait, “Jeez, someone’s going to enjoy the night.”
But the sound of a familiar voice causes you to jolt. You turned to figure out who it was and to your pleasant surprise, “Jiho!”
He looked just as surprised to see you, a lazy grin spreading across his face as he lifted the bottle in his hand in greeting. “Didn't think I'd run into you here.”
“I was about to say the same thing.” You laughed.
The boy from your music lectures, an acquaintance you exchange small talk with every now and then. Actually, you know him more as one of Seungmo’s close friends. You don’t really know how the two met but they hang out way more than you do with Seungmo.
Wait-
“Wait-” Your expression grew serious for a moment as your brows furrowed to Jiho, “Is Seungmo here too?”
Jiho shook his head, “He couldn’t be bothered.”
Yeah, that checks out. “My brother can’t be bothered doing anything.”
You knew Jiho would laugh at that comment, any slander you declare towards your brother always earned a few smiles from his friends.
“Yeah, we didn’t really plan to come tonight so only some of the guys are here.”
You nodded, mouthing an “Ah.”
Only some of the guys came.
Wait.
Suddenly your movements came to a halt.
Some of Seungmo’s friends came.
Your eyes slowly moved back to Jiho. “Who’s here tonight?”
Jiho looked at you, slightly confused by the sudden urgency in your tone. “Hm?”
“Who of Seungmo’s friends are here tonight?”
“Oh.” He shrugged, completely unaware of the internal crisis slowly building in your head. “Honestly? Not a lot. Just me, Kyrell…”
Fuck.
Surely he’s not here, yet your eyes have already started searching. You didn’t even know why you were looking. Maybe you were hoping he wasn’t here. Maybe you were hoping he was. Which was worse?
Your gaze travelled across the crowded bar, scanning through unfamiliar faces, groups gathered around tables, people shouting over the music. You barely heard Jake’s welcome speech as the sound began to feel as if it was muffling away.
He couldn’t be here. No way he’d be here.
Not when you had spent the entire bus ride here convincing yourself that you would talk to him eventually. Not when you had barely prepared yourself to even see him again. There’s no way he’s-
Well, God damn it, never fucking mind.
Fuck. He was already looking at you.
Your body immediately went still. For a second, you forgot where you were. Everything blurred around you, a seemingly common occurrence upon locking eyes with none other than-
“Mackiah!” Jiho finished his sentence. Extremely unaware that you’ve already found him.
And unlike the last time you saw him, when you ran away before he could even ask what happened, there was no easy escape this time. His expression changed the second he recognised you. For the first time ever, no smile painted his lips from the mere sight of you.
So much for talking to him later.
You never thought of Mackiah Mercer as anything more than your little brother’s weird best friend. He was just always there, loud, persistent, and annoyingly loyal. Sure, maybe he’s had a thing for you since forever but you never took it seriously. Especially when you had a boyfriend who you thought was your forever. But forever ended faster than you expected. Wounded from a fresh break-up, you could’ve taken time to heal, focused on yourself, stayed in. Instead, you partied, drank, and somehow, you started noticing Mackiah a little more than you used to.

You didn't even realise Lara's game avatar enter your server nor did you notice her leaving. Honestly, you’ve completely ignored the constant buzzing from your phone. “This game sucks.”
Mackiah giggled, “You can’t be raging over Flee the Facility.”
“Why did you make me play this?” You complained.
But as your eyes remained on your laptop, Mackiah’s eyes remained on you. When he offered you to come over to learn how to play his recent obsession, he didn’t expect you to say yes. So now you were back in his dorm, for the second time this month but for a very different reason.
A more innocent reason.
Yet he couldn’t help but feel the familiar lump on his throat, the lump that always emerged whenever you were near. Unlike your last visit, you were now sitting on the opposite side of his single bed but still his heart held the same feral butterflies. “Hey Y/N?”
“Hmm?”
Mackiah grinned as his eyes left his screen to look at you, “Look behind you.”
He watched your character turn just a second too late, the red aura giving him away. He didn’t hesitate, slamming the hammer down on your avatar without mercy. “What!?” you exclaimed, and he couldn’t help but laugh.
“Turn your volume up or you’ll never win!” He continued to laugh as you glared.
“Oh yeah? I’ll never win?” He recognised the playful undertone in her voice. Still, he was too late.
He didn’t have time to fully look at her before his laptop was snatched from his lap. “I can win like this!” She grinned, her fingers hitting every key on his keyboard.
“Hey!-” Your laugh cut him off.
And he stilled for a second. Because he hadn’t heard you laugh like that around him. Well, not since that night.
“Now what are you gonna do?” you grinned, tilting the screen away as his character walked into a hole to fall back into the first floor.
Now a wider smile spread on his face, “What are you doing!?”
“Winning.” You beamed. He leaned forward, reaching for it, but you got off the bed, running to the other side, still laughing.
“You’re cheating!” He exclaimed.
“Y/N, please-” Mackiah tried to reason as he lunged once more only for you to dodge, causing him to fall face flat onto his carpet. You continued to laugh, causing him to rise in an instant. Now his glare locked onto you.
You, on the other hand, dangled his open laptop over his wooden floors. Like a red cloth for a bull to charge at. “Y/N,” Mackiah began to warn.
In a tone lower than you were used to hearing. A glint flashed in your eyes, he caught it. Since the days he would squat at your house, he remembered this attitude of yours. One that Seungmo hated whenever they forced you to compete against them. You would always sabotage when you felt your chances of winning getting thinner. Some found it annoying, hell Seungmo always did but Mackiah admired it. He always admired everything you did.
“Mackiah?”
Your cocky tone got him to snap out of his thoughts. Then he remembered his laptop in your grasp. His eyes darted to the beanbag behind you and without hesitating, he ran up, lunging himself once more. His hand caught your wrist as he leaned further in and you lost your balance first. He followed right after.
For a second, neither of you move.
You couldn’t move. Because now you felt… aware. The laughter that echoed once before has since silenced as you looked at the boy who hovered over you. This felt different… from the last time you were caught in this position with him. Maybe because this time, you’re sober. Maybe because this time, you got a good look at his face.
Your eyes lift before you can stop yourself. His hair’s fallen into his face, slightly messy from the fall. His brows are drawn together, not fully annoyed, not fully amused, just… focused on you. His lips part slightly, like he’s about to say something but forgot how.
His hand was still wrapped around your wrist, your back sunk into his beanbag but you didn’t worry over it.
Not when you finally got such a clear view of his eyes.
The eyes that seemed to never change when it came to you. They were still filled with that same brightness whenever he looked at you. It was the same look of adoration.
He may look different now compared to back then but it seems his eyes have always stayed the same.
Especially with you.
And before you could stop yourself, your eyes started to linger to his lips. The lips you drunkenly kissed, the lips that usually beamed the warmest smile, the lips you… missed.
Why did you miss them?
“Enjoying the view?”
Your breath stuttered. You reset to reality only to find Mackiah now grinning. Ah, there’s the Mackiah you remember.
“What?”
“You were checking me out.”
“No I wasn’t.”
Mackiah leaned closer. “You were.”
You were.
Your stomach dropped.
Oh my God, you were.
The realisation hit harder than it should have, settling heavy in your chest, uncomfortable and sharp. Because it wasn’t just ‘the looking.’
It was the way you looked.
And suddenly, your mind betrayed you. Then for the first time in a while, Jiseok crossed your mind. Specifically, the words he threw at you. The accusations he dared confront after the breakup, the accusations about Mackiah… Your chest tightened. Then before you could think, you uttered,
“I gotta go.”
Mackiah stilled. He pushed himself off you, sitting up. “What?”
You didn’t look at him as you took no time getting to his bed to grab your laptop. “Sorry- I just- I forgot I had something.”
“Oh-” Mackiah stuttered, “Hey did I do anything-”
“No.”
That was the last word you told him before shutting the door.
CHAPTER 9. jiseok more like doucheok! (791 words)
(author note: yes this chapter is sorta inspired by off campus in a way... shhhhhh)
Your finger hovered over your screen. You couldn’t tell if it was your thumb twitching or your eye, maybe both? Well, considering the message that appeared before your screen from a man whose audacity hasn’t seemed to change. Because how dare he ridicule you, for claiming you can’t handle being alone. You can. Right?
Your chest felt itself clench up. Why did Jiseok have a point? You’ve only been broken up for… a week and half? The exact number was already getting blurry despite how fresh it was supposed to feel. So why did it already feel distant? At least right now.
“Ugh, everyone’s on their phones these days.”
You immediately peeled your eyes away from the message from the sound of the familiar accent, panic overcame for a split second as you hummed a “pardon?”
Mackiah froze, his hand still gripping his chair. “Sorry- I wasn’t being serious, I don’t really know why I said that.”
He sheepishly grinned as if too scared to even smile at you before going back to his seat. He gave you a sheepish grin, like he was too nervous to even fully smile at you anymore, before awkwardly sitting back down.
“Why do you do that?”
Mackiah finally looked back up at you at the sudden question. You didn’t back down from it either. Instead, you shifted in your seat, trying to seem more relaxed than you actually felt.
“You know I’m still the same, right?” You tilted your head slightly, eyes dragging over him for a moment. “You used to be…” You hesitated before finishing, “different around me.”
Then Mackiah stilled. His once tense position shifted, a hand now on his drink as the other tapped the table. You could tell he had something to say, that he was doing something to prevent himself from talking. Then he chose to change the topic,
“How’ve you been?”
You barked out a short laugh. “We've had this conversation.” You tilted your head. “A few times already.”
Mackiah didn't smile, his fingers started tapping against the table instead. “I meant…” he hesitated, “did anything happen last night?”
Oh.
Your phone screen went dark beneath your palm.
“It’s nothing I really wanna get into.” you quipped. Your once unlocked phone had quickly closed into a black screen before finding its way into your pocket. You hoped Mackiah hadn’t noticed but it’s not hard to see where his eyes travelled to.
He hadn’t said anything but you already felt caught. You didn’t want to explain yourself, especially to Mackiah on what happened last night. You didn’t want to admit that you couldn’t handle being sober with your thoughts, you didn’t want to explain your thought process on why you decided to club so last minute. Explanation felt like defeat, like you’ve been forced to share your weakness.
He remained silent, the lump remained in your throat. Because what if he asks the million dollar question: Why did you text me?
You held your breath from the thought of being interrogated, you never liked explaining yourself. You never learned how to truly express yourself. Jiseok told you that, he told you that your lack of expression always bothered him.
But as these thoughts continue stacking on top of every wrinkle in your brain-
“Don’t eat that!”
Suddenly you’ve woken up. Your eyes quickly found Mackiah’s hand on yours that wrapped around a cookie you didn’t realise you were holding. Immediately you looked up at him, “Oh shit, did I grab yours?”
“Yes,” he chuckled. “It also has nuts…”
“Sorry?”
“You’re allergic to nuts.”
Then you hesitated, “You remembered?” You raised a brow.
Mackiah looked at you confused, “Of course.”
“When did I even tell you I was allergic to nuts?”
Your eyes caught Mackiah’s lips form a soft smile, then you realised his hand was still embracing yours. Sudden heat crawled up your neck, causing you to finally let go of the cookie before he retracted back to himself, “You told me two years ago when I offered you my leftover cashews.”
You don’t even remember that conversation.
Jiseok never remembered your allergies.
“This is yours.” He slid the plated red velvet cookie to your side of the table.
“Right.” You nodded before taking it.
“Thanks for taking me here by the way, I swear I’ll pay you back-”
“Y/N, seriously, don’t worry about it.”
He waved it off so casually.
“This is starting to feel like a date.” You tried to joke, unaware of the smile creeping up your mouth.
Mackiah noticed it though, his grin brightened. “Call it what you want.”
He then took a bite of his treat and a sip of his drink, leaving you to wonder once more. Call it what you want? Then your thoughts came back to Jiseok’s words. Then suddenly you don’t know what to think.
