Just a little something for @uhhbananafrappe 's Myth Monster Wander!
Her myth monsters give me life 🥰
---
The village market was bustling, despite the chill of early morning hanging over the valley. Vendors scurried to and fro through the streets, racing to finish preparing their wares before the morning rush. Monsters and humans alike wandered from shop to shop, gathering supplies they would need that day. The hum of conversations and the shouts of merchants flowed through the air, creating a welcoming ambiance.
You hummed a quiet tune, wandering through the crowd. Your hands clutched the strap of your satchel as you stopped at a nearby merchant, eyes taking in all of the beautiful wares that they had on display. A necklace caught your eye, and you found yourself reaching out to pluck it from the display before you could stop yourself. A deep chuckle broke you from your trance and you snatched your hand back, apology on your tongue. You glanced up at the merchant as you apologized, and it died on your lips, replaced by a surprise laugh.
"Wander," You asked excitedly, shading your eyes against the rapidly rising sun to get a better look at his face. Sure enough, the skeleton leaned forward, arm crossed over the other as he leaned on the counter, his usual laidback grin on his teeth. A grin brightened your face at the sight of him. "I thought you were not due to arrive for another week!"
He shrugged, winking in a way you knew spelt trouble. He was as casual as ever though, leaning back to reach into his bag. "thought i could drop by to check on my favorite customer."
"Oh? And here I thought you were here merely for business. You should not mix pleasure with business darling." You purred, a faint blush blossomed along your cheeks as you leaned over the counter, a flirtatious smile playing on your lips. You were hoping to see even a hint of a blush, however, he remained as unshakable as ever. You could not help the small pang of disappointment that fluttered through your chest when he merely winked, a quick-witted flirtatious quip at the ready.
After a few moments, he pulled a beautiful charm necklace out of his bag. It gleamed in the sunlight, sending lights dancing across Wander's face as he held it out to you. You took it gently, running your fingers over the smooth surface. Oddly enough, the stone was warm in your hand. The faint hum of magic deep within sparked softly, sending tingles across the skin of your fingers. With a grateful smile you slip the delicate chain over your head, the stone coming to rest along your collarbone. You placed a hand over the warm stone. "Thank you Wander, I will treasure it."
His casual grin softened into something warmer, almost affectionate when you look up from the charm. His normal grin was back in an instant, as if it had never left. You blinked, wondering if you had imagined the shift in his smile, your own budding affection for the skeleton creating mirages to needle you with images of what could be.
The two of you make small talk for a while after, flirtatious quips and lingering glances a normal affair during these pleasantries. The sun is high when you bid the merchant adieu, leaving him to tend to his other customers while you stroll back into the flow of the crowd, getting lost in the conversations and merchandise of the market for a few hours more.
---
By the time you find all of the supplies you were looking for evening has begun to set in, the setting sun casting a beautiful orange glow over the village. With sore feet and a tragically empty coin purse you long for the peaceful embrace of your home, but as you turn the corner to your street a familiar baritone calls out, wishing for a moment of your time. A happy smile lifted your lips when you turn to greet Wander, shifting your supplies to sit more comfortably in your arms.
You were more than flustered when he explained the reason for seeking you out so late. He wanted to take you out for an evening meal, his treat. You bit your lip in indecision, but the promise of a warm meal and even better company ultimately swayed you. His smile brightened when you agreed and he offered you his arm, escorting you to the local tavern.
---
The tavern was warm and lively with conversations. The delicious smell of cooking food saturated the place, almost overpowering the pungent scent of alcohol permeating the wood of the furniture. Wander led you to a less crowded part of the tavern, a small table for two tucked away in a secluded corner of the rowdy room. You sighed in quiet relief as you settled into the seat Wander pulled out for you, happy to be away from the noise and chaos of the other patrons.
Wander took his seat across from you, placing his bag beside his chair, before waving down a passing barmaid. She nodded politely when she saw him hailing her, and slipped back through the rowdy crowd to bring you your meals.
"Oh! That reminds me," you reached down into the hand-sewn pocket of your pants and pulled out a small package. You passed it to Wander, who took it with a perplex tilt of his browbone. You smiled, gesturing for him to open it. "I found it in the market a few weeks ago and thought of you. I... uhh... Wander...?"
The package laid open in the palm of his hand, the fingers wrapped carefully around the contents, like he was afraid it would break. The expression he was wearing made your heart jump. His eyes were blown with, eyelights fuzzy around the edges, grin softening. He looked so utterly touched. He ran a finger over your gift before plucking it out of the paper and fastened the silver clock pin to his clock, before turning his gaze to you, a soft, sea green blush blossoming across his cheek bones.
"thank you. i'm, uhh, not usually on the receiving end of this exchange." He chuckled sheepishly, running a finger over his new pin. Your face warms and your heart does a little flutter in your chest at the way he was looking at you. He reached across the table, wrapping his phalanges around your fingers, chilled bone meeting warm skin. When your blush deepened, he chuckled, squeezing your hand gently. "you're always full of surprises."
The barmaid placed your meals on the table at that moment, breaking the small bubble of something that had formed around the two of you. You both thanked her and Wander slipped a large coin into her hand as she passed. She smiled faintly at him before sliding into her apron and continued on her way.
The meal was delicious as always, and the company was even better. Wander was an excellent listener and he was easy to have a conversation with. He listened quietly as you regaled him with stories, and in turn he told you stories of his travels, of far off lands that you could only dream of visiting. He told you of snow capped mountains, of scorching desert, of mild forests filled with nature... you listened, awestruck at the grandeur of it all.
All too soon the meals had been eaten and it was time to leave. Wander walked you home, arm in arm. He pressed a kiss to the back of your head in parting, brushing a stray hair out of your face, before he disappeared into the night, leaving you feeling warm, heart fluttering in your chest, and a blush warming your face.
---
Night crept along the valley, draping everything in its wake, softening the sharp edges and vivid brightness of the day with ebony satin. The light of the rising full moon blanketed the earth in with it's soothing glow, brightening the night sky and illuminating the path as Wander leaves the small village behind, his merchant bag bouncing noisily against his femur in his hurry. He pays it little mind, his mind too far away to give it much thought.
He had stayed in the village too long. He could already feel his magic surging in his Soul, pulling at his bones. He pushed back at the feeling, wanting to get to the safety of his camp before-
The magic of the full moon caressed his bones, and his magic surged through him, bones trembling as his magic took form. Bones heaved and stretched, his magic sparking in relief as he shook off his monster form, beast form taking over.
He sighed softly, breathing in the night air, his magic stirring in his bones. His small moment of peace was shattered by a surprised inhale behind him. He jolted, turning his head to see a small figure standing behind him. His eyes widened.
It was you... he said your name softly, a natural roughness growling in his voice. You jerked back to life, taking a cautious step back, eyes flickering across his body until they fixated on something, your eyes widened in recognition.
You glanced back up, meeting his troubled gaze.
"Wander...?"
