The ones he forgot
Alador walked around his home, still feeling weak from the fire flu, but fury compelled him forward. How could Odalia fire half his staff and expect them to produce the same amount of Abominations for the Emperor?! Had she lost her mind!?
Ugh! The angrier he felt the dizzier and he felt another fireball fly up his burning lungs. He tilted his head up and coughed, unleashing a flame that hit their family portrait and burned Odalia’s face in the process.
He smiled a bit at that, he honestly never really liked that portrait, it was so staged and none of them were smiling in it except Odalia... Well, she had been smiling in it. Not so much anymore. He felt the smile fall when he recalled what Amity had said to him at the brawl. Remembering how she had yelled at him for not paying attention to her.
He felt guilt swallow his aching, burning body. He honestly hadn’t really paid much attention to her over the past couple of years, and looking back on when he’d paid more attention to her, he only really just followed Odalia’s lead on everything. Which was honestly just as bad if he was remembering right.
Threatening a small child and her whole family’s life if Amity didn’t stop being friends with her? Just... why had he gone along with that back then? It was so unnecessarily cruel... like when Odalia had Principal Bump expel Amity’s friends and girlfriend because she didn’t approve of them.
Titan, he really had let her down, hadn’t he?
“Dad?” A different female voice called. He turned... well, he kinda turned, it was more of a swivel that had his head spinning and another fireball flying out of his mouth with a cough that burned the stupid, expensive ugly carpet that Odalia insisted they get.
Once he recovered from that, he saw “Emira? Edric?” he wheezed, his eldest children staring at him as if he was on fire before Emira grabbed a vase filled with flowers and used them to put out the flames while Edric held up his hand to protect a small creature that he’d never seen in the house before.
“What are you doing out of bed?” Emira asked, “You’re clearly still sick!”
“Your mother-” He began before he had a coughing fit, flames burning his chest and throat as he turned away and coughed, further destroying the rug.
“Ya know, I never liked that rug.” Edric said as Emira called for the Abomination butler and ordered it to put out the fire. Which it did, it walked over and used it’s body to put what was left of the rug out.
Alador smiled despite the pain, and once he was done coughing, his eldest daughter’s arm around him as she scowled at her brother, he said, “Me neither.”
“Then why do we have it?” Edric asked, the little beast now resting on his shoulder.
“Your mother.” He said simply. The twins exchanged a look before Emira said, “Edric, can you make a cooling potion for Dad while I get him back in bed? Because while we can all agree that it would be nice to redecorate, Mom will kill all of us if we burn the house down.”
Edric making a potion? What?
“You make potions?” He managed.
“J-just as a hobby...” Edric blurted, holding his hands out and his eyes wide for a moment before he lowered them and sucked in a breath, as if bracing himself. “No, actually, I’m a multi-track student now, Dad. I’m studying illusions, beast keeping and potions.” He said, then cowered again, “Please don’t ground me!”
Alador blinked, shocked, “I-I thought you both loved illusion magic... I had no idea you were interested in other kinds.”
“We don’t ‘love’ illusions.” Emira explained as Edric went to his other side and helped, “Well, we don’t hate them either, but we originally got into them because we hated Abomination magic.”
“No offense.” Edric said.
“None taken.” Alador assured him.
“We’d use illusion magic to sneak out and do what we wanted to do.” Emira told him. “I study healing magic in my spare time because Edric keeps getting himself hurt by wild animals or by mixing things up without thinking...”
“You study it because you like it! That’s why you’re multi-tracking in illusions and healing,” Edric said in an accusatory tone, “But I will admit it’s come in handy.”
“You’re welcome.” She said in a triumphant tone as they made their way back to Alador’s and Odalia’s bedroom.
He didn’t honestly know why he called it that. He slept more in the basement in the past couple of years than he had up here, which Odalia had apparently used as an excuse to redecorate in here without asking him first. He’d been shocked after he’d been sent up here to ‘not get the other workers sick!’
“Yikes.” Edric commented, voicing Alador’s thoughts on the changes perfectly, “I think I like your den in the basement better.”
“That makes two of us.” He grumbled. Their old room had been a nice shade of purple, with thick curtains that blocked out the light which was perfect when he stayed up late working. Now the walls were the color of egg shells and the curtains were these thin bits of cloth that did nothing to hide the bright sunlight that made the room brighter.
Once they reached the bed which once was a large, comfy bed with a blanket his mother had made them by hand with a bit of weight to it to help him relax, and now was this smaller bed with a canopy that was made of the same material as the curtains, the blanket being just a little thicker than that and he winced as he felt how hard the mattress felt against his back.
He missed the blanket his mother made them. It was a lovely blanket, so warm and soft...
“Wait, didn’t they have a blanket Grandma made here?” Edric asked, once again, reading his mind.
“Yeah, mom said it was tacky and told the butler to throw it out, but I hid it in my closet.” Emira informed them both, “I’ll go get it.”
“And I’ll go work on the cooling potion!” Edric said.
With their new missions, the twins exited the room and went their separate ways... well Emira left first and Edric said, “But seriously though, I liked the way this was before. It looked cozier.” Before running off.
Alador smiled sadly to himself. He had no idea Edric had the same taste in furniture and decorations as he did... He also didn’t know he had a pet... or studied any other kind of magic outside illusions. He had no idea Emira knew about healing magic either...
‘Well when was the last time you paid attention to them?’ a voice in his head accused. He winced and sighed.
And here he thought he’d been a negligent parent to one child, but it turned out, he hadn’t been paying attention to any of his kids in a very long time...
He closed his eyes and tried to think back to if he could see signs of their passions from the start...
He remembered how excited Edric was when Alador tried to help him mix up his first abomination. He insisted on trying out all sorts of strange ingredients in it, which Alador encouraged, as each Abomination Witch was encouraged to make their own variation that was specific to them. It helped broaden the different aspects one’s creation could do. Some were made to withstand the boiling rains to help rescue the injured, some were made to stretch easily to help clean or to help collect things from high places. He was honestly very eager to see what his son would create...
Only for him to find that Edric preferred the mixing and brewing more than anything related to abominations. He’d also insist on going out and collecting things from beasts to ‘help with his abomination brew’. But ended up with Alador and him coming home after nearly being killed by another creature, with Edric eagerly babbling on about wanting to know more about the beast they met.
And while part of him was tired and wished his son was a bit more interested in abominations, it was nice to see him enjoy himself.
Emira, his eldest, often would rush over and scold her twin for getting them both hurt, her first spell circle was a healing circle and she’d used it a lot on him and Edric, and Amity when she’d start walking (to the twins delight, eagerly diving to the floor when they first saw her pull herself into a standing position and excitedly calling for her) and would immediately heal any bruises or cuts from a tumble or stumble. Although now he wondered if it was just because she wanted to help her little sister or because of how irritated Odalia would become when she heard any of their children cry.
She was the one who patched up her brother and sister, her spells healing them far better than someone her age would normally be able to. She was the one who soothed them after they cried and was often quick to offer herself up in defense of her siblings.
Alador felt a pang of guilt. That should’ve been his and Odalia’s jobs as parents, not hers. But she had quickly grown to be their protector.
She was the first one to learn illusions, he remembered that clearly. She had done an illusion to hide that Edric had knocked over a particularly ugly vase. (Odalia’s pick, he didn’t feel all that bad about it being broken, but Odalia was furious) It didn’t last long and they both got in trouble, but he’d honestly been impressed by her skill. Edric quickly picked it up after her, helping her hide things better, but she had been quick to pick up illusion magic.
She was the one who often spoke with a silver tongue (something she probably picked up from Odalia) to try to get them out of trouble. She was the most mature and adult like. She was the one who kept her brother under control and out of trouble, or she was just very good at hiding it and he had been oblivious. Emira would always try to phrase things to lessen punishments and he recalled after the incident with Amity’s poor friend, Emira had tried convincing them to retract their threat, only for Odalia to insist that what they were doing was right for their sister and banish her from the room with ‘end of discussion’.
It was when Odalia began really pushing the twins to follow in Alador’s footsteps when they started to show skills in illusions, often using them to escape like Emira had told him earlier. She had been furious, until she realized that both twins were actually quite skilled in it.
“We could use some showmen in the family.” She’d said, “I can’t keep doing the heavy lifting on stage while conducting the business.”
The twins never really fought her on it, so he figured they were okay with it.
He should’ve known better.
He should’ve asked.
He should’ve paid them more attention.
When Amity showed interest in abominations, Odalia started focusing both of their attention more on her, leaving the twins to their own devices. Which probably had been nice at first, but he still should’ve given his elder children more attention. Emira should not had to have grow up so fast. Edric should’ve been free to explore and enjoy his passions without feeling like he had to hide them. Amity should’ve had more freedom to live her life the way she wanted.
And Alador should’ve been a better parent.
He heard something that snapped him back into the ugly bedroom, had he been sleeping? Or just in a fever dazed memory recall?
He had no idea, but he saw Emira and Edric on either side of him, the abomination butler behind them, Emira ordering the butler to help him sit up so he could see his children better.
Edric looked like a mess, bits of his hair and clothing scorched, his little beast on his shoulder, clearly concerned for him. Emira carefully placed the blanket his mother made for them on his body, “Sorry to wake you Dad, but Edric finally finished the potion and I had to deal with Mom before I could get the blanket.”
“Hey! How was I supposed to know I wasn’t actually out of ice slug slime?” Edric asked, “I mean, I keep telling you and Mittens to stay out of my room and not mess with my system!-”
“Stop stealing my mascara then.” Emira commented with a roll of her eyes before pointing to Alador and began unfolding the blanket to place on the bed. Edric handed him the potion and said, “it should help with your throat.”
He croaked out a thank you and drank it. It felt like his throat was no longer on fire, his body relaxing a bit as the potion did it’s work, the blanket so nice and warm and just the right amount of weight on his body. He’d forgotten how nice a weighted blanket felt on him.
Emira then began using her magic on him, humming thoughtfully before saying, “We’ll bring you another potion in a few hours, let us know if your ears feel warm.”
The butler then handed him the tray and he felt his nose become less stuffy from the steam.
“Thank you.” He said again, then looked at his eldest children and said, “I’m sorry I never noticed your true passions. I-if your mother gives you a hard time about it, leave her to me, okay?”
The twins seemed surprised, but nodded before Emira stammered out that the butler would take his dishes when he was done before they both scampered out of the room, their cheeks pink.
He looked at the abomination butler, “Can you make sure to clear my schedule after the Day of Unity? I-I think it’s about time I start acting like a parent and start learning about the kinds of people my kids are and listening to them more.”
The butler simply nodded, unable to say anything else... It was kinda uncomfortable after the statement he just made. It was like it was judging him for his lack of parenting/bad parenting with it’s silence, even though he knew for a fact it wasn’t... okay maybe he was kinda getting why Emira and Edric weren’t interested in Abominations, they weren’t really fun conversation partners.
“Next ones I make will be able to talk,” He mumbled as he spooned up some soup for himself, “Maybe even be able to make up excuses for all of us to have a day to ourselves to relax.”
His mind began spinning with ideas as he ate, his vision staying clear as he enjoyed the food, his chest feeling a bit lighter, although if it was the treatment or his new determination to be better for his kids, he didn’t know.
But he was looking forward to finding out.
Eda livestreamed King on Penstagram to help him find his dad, and it was super adorable and moving 😭 (Mama Eda and King Clawthorne❤️)
King’s dad (we all assume) was watching the stream...
And so did Eberwolf 🐾
Does this mean these two follow Eda (aka BADGIRLCOVEN) on Penstagram?
I love that Eber didn’t give a rat’s ass about Darius at the end 😹
eberwolf and the flesh eating bugs
Witchsona Jacky in their school uniform
They actually tried a couple of different tracks before narrowing down their interest to either Beast Keeping or Illusions, so when multi-tracks became a thing they no longer had to try and decide between the two
Someone said Eberwolf reminded them of Winnie and I totally agree!
Winnie is from Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School and Eberwolf is from The Owl House
