"Or, tant que l'objet n'est libéré que dans sa fonction, l'homme réciproquement n'est libéré que comme usager de cet objet. Ceci encore une fois est un progrès, mais non pas un moment décisif. Un lit est un lit, une chaise une chaise: il n'y a pas de relation entre eux tant qu'ils ne servent qu'à ce quoi ils servent. Sans relation, pas d'espace, car l'espace n'existe qu'ouvert, suscité, rythmé, élargi par une corrélation des objets et un dépassement de leur fonction dans cette structure neuve. L'espace est en quelque sorte la liberté réelle de l'objet, sa fonction n'est que sa liberté formelle. La salle à manger bourgeoise était structurée, mais c'était une structure close. L'environnement fonctionnel est plus ouvert, plus libre, mais il est déstructuré, morcelé en ses diverses fonctions. Entre les deux, dans la césure entre espace psychologique intégré et espace fonctionnel morcelé, les objets de série se meuvent, témoins de l'un et de l'autre, souvent dans le cadre d'un même intérieur."
