Why Bucky and Sam Closing Their Eyes When They Hugged Each Other Does Not Indicate Romantic Feelings
Okay, the "SamBucky" 'shippers keep insisting that the fact Bucky and Sam closed their eyes when they hugged in Captain America Brave New World must "prove" they're in love, but I'm gonna show how that actually doesn't make sense.
Point 1: Consider context.
Ignoring that stupid so-called watermark, obviously there's a fairly intense situation going on around all of this, what with Joaquin being operated on, so it stands to reason Bucky and Sam would wanna have that second or 2 of not thinking about it and just enjoying that hug/each other's company, but that is something any 2 individuals may do under similar circumstances, however, okay, I know that's not quite enough, so on to....
Point 2: They friggin' shake hands!
I'm just... um... that's not even close to "romantic", and Bucky's "I love you, buddy" right after clearly is also in the platonic friendship range because contrary to what the "SamBucky" 'shippers' like blinders supposedly indicate, loving someone whom you're not directly related to does not necessarily mean you have particular feelings for that person, and the way Bucky says that is well within the just friends category.
Bonus Points:
These are points that fit with the 1st 2 or like strengthen them but are not directly to do with the scene that includes Bucky during Captain America Brave New World...
Bonus Point 1: Bucky and Sam have known each other a long time now.
Bucky and Sam had been definite friends in the MCU up to that time for 4 years, hanging out, supporting each other even when they weren't able to visit, such, and if 2 grown adults have not gotten into a straight-up relationship after that long/with plenty of opportunity then it's just not meant to happen, and seeing as like I said, Bucky and Sam do not in any way act as though they're romantically involved, obviously this must mean that they just don't see each other that way.
Bonus Point 2: Bucky didn't close his eyes when he hugged Steve.
As I am very fond of like pointing out, Bucky is in love with Steve (although Steve didn't feel the same way while respecting how Bucky feels when he realised and of course Bucky respected Steve's part), and despite being from the back during the hug itself in Avengers Infinity War, it's clear soon after Bucky had his eyes open the whole time, so naturally this means Bucky isn't in the habit of closing his eyes to hug someone he feels for like that, regardless of how long it's been.
Bonus Point 3: I don't feel anything like that between Bucky and Sam.
Being an empath, I can literally feel the emotions of others (particularly Bucky's but anybody well enough), and while that's the main way I can tell Bucky is in love with Steve, it's also how I can tell Bucky and Sam are not in love, and therefore, the fact Bucky and Sam closed their eyes when hugging does not mean what the "SamBucky" 'shippers assume it does.
Conclusion:
What Bucky and Sam do have is actually really special, and it's sad that some people try and cheapen it by not simply accepting it for what it is: a brotherly bond between 2 best friends, hugs and all.
Want to know my biggest pet peeve with Supernatural?
Sam WInchester is SMOKIN’ HOT and it’s never expressed on the show!
Dean is hot, i wont argue that, but that’s spoken a lot on the show. People often refer to the duo like, the cute one and the smart one, or the hot one and the big one, and sometimes give them both credit for their looks together, like Crowley saying “You’re (Sam and Dean) lucky you have your looks” but never give Sam credit for how attractive he is on his own. The closest we have to Sam’s looks being appreciated is from Becky.the stalker, and even she doesn’t say he’s hot, or gorgeous, or beautiful or anything like that, just that he’s “so firm” and its obvious that shes obssessed with him. And the woman Gary!Sam picked up at the bar, did say he was stunning, but only Gary heard that, not Sam. On the other hand, Cas is not hot. Granted that’s my opinion, some of you think he is, and thats cool, but the show stresses that he’s hot. He’s reffered to as “Pretty boy angel” in S5, “Hot and sexy” in S7 “Feathered Castiel is hot” in S9 and most recently Dean refers to him as “My shy but devistatingly handsome friend” in S12. And STILL no one has told Sam he’s gorgeous?? Honestly, in the early seasons, I didn’t find him hot either. I thought he was adorable, but he looked like a cute, really tall, teenager. By S4 he had grown into sexy, but that was only part time through S4 and 5. Most of the time he was nerdy/cute, but sometimes he made me think “Damn, this kid can really be sexy when they let him be” The key being “when they let him be”. It always seemed to me (and still does) that the show must decide how hot Sam will be that episode, while they always keep Dean and Cas the same, pretty much. Come S6 and 7. Sam was just HOT, no getting around it then. They didn’t nerd him up so much, and even when they did, he was gorgeous. Then came Season 8 when he became excruciatingly beautiful!! Like, there was no way to overlook how amazing he looked, and yet, nearing the end of the season, they made him look sick for The Trials. Sorry Sam, you’re not allowed to look THAT amazing all the time. S9, his looks were dialed back a little. Still hot, but the nerdy look came back. Then for some reason they thought that haircut in s10 was a good thing?? GAH!! That was a terrible look for him, but thankfully he was back to beautiful in S11. Now, in S12, theyre doing it again... like choosing between whether he’s gorgeous and sexy in an episode or cute and nerdy, and occasionally, he just looks... I dunno, weird, like in the beginning of the Hitler episode. Meanwhile, Dean and Cas still look the same and promoted as hot. This pisses me off!!!!I understand that the show wants to keep Sam nerdy, and I can appreciate that, but Jared himself is painfully attractive and should always be allowed to be. The show should be proud that they have not 1 but 2 gorgeous/sexy leading men and promote the hell out of it! Dont go crazy with a flat iron, or cover him up in 10 layers of flannel, flaunt Sam WInchester’s beauty!!!!
Um, so, I'm pretty sure I was blocked by a couple of "SamBucky" 'shippers...
which is pretty pathetic if true since it proves they're not only wrong but can be petty as well (not all of them on that 2nd part, though, just to confirm), and the really stupid thing about it is I was actually trying to reblog something I appreciated (even though I did very politely like point out that I don't support their so-called ship range).
The "SamBucky" 'shipping is problematic.
Practically my whole feed or whatever was about how "SamBucky" is "canon" because Bucky said "I love you" to Sam, but that "buddy" was clearly not meant in a romantic way (and I know Bucky called Steve "buddy" when Bucky is in love with him but the context/Bucky's tone is very different where it's so obvious he wants to confess his love but realises it's better to respect Steve's part in that which Steve must've appreciated what with undoubtedly being able to tell how Bucky felt too) nor was it any sort of not wanting to be as direct, just... Anthony was saying about this too like how sad it is that men can't have a close, emotional bond without it being made out to be something it's not when the other problem with that is how it like cheapens actual romantic relationships between 2 men since if "everybody's gay" then "nobody's gay", right?! Well... wrong, I mean... of course it doesn't work like that; using terms like " queer platonic", "situationship", or plain 'shipping individuals that shouldn't be shipped is disrespectful as it is, but there's also the glaring fact that this only happens with men, which people claim to be open-minded then can't just let men hug or rest on each other when if women do that as friends then no one assumes anything, and I just get so pissed off at how "progessive" people think they're being when nothing could be further from the truth; let men love each other in however way they do, be it a platonic, brotherly way such as in the case of Sam and Bucky or a romantic way nothing should be insisted upon or expected that isn't blatantly shown or said where there's no mistaking it or at least truly, properly implied, then far as subtlety there keeps being those who somehow got the impression Bucky doesn't know how to act in the world when he's literally been free for nearly 10 years now altogether so clearly would understand how things work anymore; he chose to be a congressman for heaven's sake, and it's not like people didn't figure out ways back in "Bucky's time", not to mention there's nothing to even indicate whether that was ever like frowned upon in the MCU, but either way Bucky would be able to tell if Sam had feelings for him because like I said (above in the parentheses), Bucky is very empathetic, and if Bucky felt the same way he'd reciprocate and this would've happened years ago instead of their supposedly leading each other on for all this time seeing as Bucky absolutely has shown his emotions/even says how he feels to 1 degree or another when he knows he can rely on someone, except neither Sam nor Bucky feels that way; there's no pretense; they really are just very good friends; and not everything has to be read into.
